{"id":59473,"date":"2019-08-01T09:15:58","date_gmt":"2019-08-01T13:15:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=59473"},"modified":"2019-08-01T16:17:31","modified_gmt":"2019-08-01T20:17:31","slug":"quebec-students-take-in-ontario-culture-during-brock-studies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/08\/quebec-students-take-in-ontario-culture-during-brock-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Quebec students take in Ontario culture during Brock studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guillaume Brassard-M\u00e9thot began the summer with the opportunity to study almost anywhere in Canada at his feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It didn\u2019t take long for the industrial relations student from Quebec\u2019s Laval University to decide where he would land to improve his English language skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBrock was my first choice and I was very happy to come here,\u201d Brassard-M\u00e9thot said after spending a month studying in St. Catharines. In addition to his own research, he was swayed by the glowing testimonial of a friend who spent last summer at Brock and praised the University for its programming and beautiful setting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brassard-M\u00e9thot is now finishing up his time in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">government-funded<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/international\/future\/esl\/explore\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explore program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, through which students choose from 19 different institutions to practise their English over the summer and experience the diversity of other cultures across the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59475\" style=\"width: 468px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59475\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-59475\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Niagara-Falls-Guillaume-Brassard-Me\u0301thot-1050x785.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"458\" height=\"342\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-59475\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Explore program participant Guillaume Brassard-M\u00e9thot (second from right), an industrial relations student from Laval University in Quebec, visits Niagara Falls with his new classmates as part of an organized day trip on July 6.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Program participants \u2014 29 of whom studied at Brock this year \u2014 receive funding that covers tuition fees, instructional materials, meals and accommodations, workshops and other mandatory activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explore students spend 20 hours per week with in-class English language instruction alongside Brock\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/international\/future\/esl\/selp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer English Language Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a five-week course focused on improving students\u2019 English language abilities as they prepare for further academic studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While improving his English was\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brassard-M\u00e9thot No. 1 priority, he found meeting new classmates from other countries was also a valuable experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re not just with Quebec students, but studying alongside people from Asia, South America and other areas,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have the possibility to make friends from around the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than 300 students from Burundi, Canada, China, France, Japan, Korea, Martinique, Mexico, Palestine, Qatar and Ukraine are currently enrolled in summer ESL classes, one of the highest enrolments on record at Brock University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The diversity at Brock means the only common language most students have is English, motivating them to communicate with each other and to improve their language abilities.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Explore program included daily activities on campus, as well as a number of optional day trips to some of Ontario\u2019s most popular attractions.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout July, Brassard-M\u00e9thot and his Explore peers visited Niagara Falls, went to a Toronto Blue Jays baseball game and enjoyed a winery tour in Niagara-on-the-Lake.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reflecting on his experience, Brassard-M\u00e9thot said he found great value in the program, particularly in the daily project class that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0gave students real-world scenarios to apply their learning.
