{"id":59170,"date":"2019-07-10T15:44:32","date_gmt":"2019-07-10T19:44:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=59170"},"modified":"2019-07-10T15:44:32","modified_gmt":"2019-07-10T19:44:32","slug":"film-festival-to-celebrate-indigenous-culture-this-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/07\/film-festival-to-celebrate-indigenous-culture-this-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Film festival to celebrate Indigenous culture this weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Films from across the globe will grace the big screen in northern Ontario this weekend as the Weengushk International Film Festival (WIFF) returns for its second year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Indigenous-focused, Brock-sponsored event opens Friday, July 12 and wraps with a closing gala Sunday, July 14 at Aundeck Omni Kaning\u2019s Four Directions Complex on Manitoulin Island.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hosted by the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weengushk Film Institute (WFI), the festival was created to highlight Indigenous talent, including actors, writers, directors and filmmakers from around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event was created by WFI founder and Brock Chancellor Shirley Cheechoo<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to explore Indigenous topics while breaking down stereotypes and racial barriers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The festival opens with a screening of <\/span><em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waru<\/span><\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a powerful film created by a group of M\u0101ori female directors of New Zealand. The women share insights into the complexity of child abuse through a sequence of eight short films that seamlessly become one.
