{"id":59133,"date":"2019-07-05T15:31:40","date_gmt":"2019-07-05T19:31:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=59133"},"modified":"2019-07-05T16:07:59","modified_gmt":"2019-07-05T20:07:59","slug":"brock-welcomes-the-world-as-esl-students-begin-their-time-on-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/07\/brock-welcomes-the-world-as-esl-students-begin-their-time-on-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock welcomes the world as ESL students begin their time on campus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omar L\u00f3pez felt like he was on the set of a big screen film.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his mind, Brock\u2019s campus seemed plucked straight from a coming-of-age story about university life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s like a dream,\u201d said the Mexico City resident, just days after beginning his Brock studies. \u201cWhen you see a movie about college and university, I picture it like this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u00f3pez was among a group of 50 students from Mexico who came to the University to improve their language skills and experience Canadian culture for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They arrived in Canada earlier this week through a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/08\/brock-welcomes-mexican-learners-through-government-program\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joint government program with Mexico<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called Proyecta. The initiative, which will see an additional 50 students arrive to Brock Aug. 5, provides undergraduate students and teachers in Mexico with scholarships for English as a second language (ESL) programming to further their academic and professional aspirations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Proyecta students were not the only ones experiencing Brock\u2019s campus \u2014 and Canada, for that matter \u2014 for the first time this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students from around the world came together in anticipation of the start of Brock\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/international\/future\/esl\/selp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Summer English Language Program (SELP)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a five-week course focused on improving students\u2019 English language abilities as they prepare for further academic studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This term has marked one of the University\u2019s highest enrolments on record for ESL summer programming, with more than 300 students from Burundi, Canada, China, France, Japan, Korea, Martinique, Mexico, Palestine, Qatar and Ukraine registered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In addition to SELP and Proyecta participants,\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than 230 students are enrolled in Brock\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/international\/future\/esl\/ielp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Intensive English Language Program (IELP)<\/span><\/a>, making<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the International Centre, on the east end of Brock\u2019s main campus, a hub for intercultural learning and understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Proyecta student Jocsan Flor was hopeful the abundance of students from around the world would make for some interesting mingling opportunities.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI hope to meet people from different cultures and get a better appreciation for them,&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDiversity is part of what makes this program so exciting,\u201d said Geoffrey Harrington Eden, Associate Director, Brock ESL Services. \u201cStudents have the opportunity to experience local culture, but also interact with classmates from 11 different countries this summer.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of the SELP program, students spend 20 hours per week with in-class English language instruction alongside French Canadian students from Canada\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/international\/future\/esl\/explore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Explore Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summer programming includes not only classroom time, but also daily activities on campus and a number of optional day trips.
