{"id":58993,"date":"2019-06-21T09:06:33","date_gmt":"2019-06-21T13:06:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=58993"},"modified":"2019-06-21T16:24:06","modified_gmt":"2019-06-21T20:24:06","slug":"international-students-net-niagara-soccer-club-spots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/06\/international-students-net-niagara-soccer-club-spots\/","title":{"rendered":"International students net Niagara soccer club spots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While they came to Canada with the goal of improving their English skills, two Brock University students soon found themselves scoring spots on one of Niagara\u2019s premier men\u2019s soccer clubs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Riku Nakamura and Kazuki Imoto, both undergraduate students from Toyo University in Japan, arrived at Brock University in February for a 26-week ESL program to improve their English language proficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn\u2019t long before instructor Loralee Vince recognized the two ESL students shared a passion that went beyond the classroom and onto the soccer field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Nakamura, from Chiba, and Imoto, from Saitama, shared their love of the game during a class presentation and spoke about playing competitive soccer in Japan since early childhood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTalking about sports in the classroom helps students to relate to each other, bridge cultural differences and share in a common goal,\u201d Vince said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When she shared their story with her son Samuel Vince (BSM \u201916), goalie for the Niagara United Soccer Club, they arranged to have the pair try out for the team in Niagara Falls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLoralee\u2019s son met with us and we talked about soccer,\u201d Nakamura said. \u201cHe encouraged us to try out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both students made the premier men&#8217;s soccer team. Shortly after being added to the roster about a month ago, Nakamura scored a goal in his first game.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was very exciting,\u201d he said. \u201cThe opportunity to make that first impression with teammates was unforgettable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The pair\u2019s soccer experience has also been made memorable by their classmates, who have been attending games to cheer them on from the stands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hitting the local fields has been an eye-opening experience for Nakamura and Imoto, who have noticed several differences in the North American style of play compared to Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s an increased level of emotion among players as they react to penalties, missed calls and goals being scored, Imoto said.
