{"id":58864,"date":"2019-06-14T11:10:53","date_gmt":"2019-06-14T15:10:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=58864"},"modified":"2019-06-14T16:18:17","modified_gmt":"2019-06-14T20:18:17","slug":"humanities-grad-lauded-for-drive-to-give-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/06\/humanities-grad-lauded-for-drive-to-give-back\/","title":{"rendered":"Humanities grad lauded for drive to give back"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Caring about others has been a hallmark of Keegan Bruce\u2019s time at Brock.<\/p>\n<p>And during the University&#8217;s Friday, June 14 Convocation ceremony, she was recognized for those efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Just before crossing the stage to receive her Bachelor of Arts degree, Bruce was presented with the undergraduate Spirit of Brock award for the Faculty of Humanities.<\/p>\n<p>Bruce began volunteering with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opirgbrock.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OPIRG<\/a> (Ontario Public Interest Research Group) at Brock during her third year. The organization was going through some challenges and Bruce embraced the opportunity to get the wider community involved with OPIRG initiatives.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_58834\" style=\"width: 382px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58834\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-58834\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Humanities-and-Math-31-RS-1050x877.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"372\" height=\"311\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-58834\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elisabeth Zimmerman, of Brock&#8217;s Board of Trustees, presents Keegan Bruce with the Spirit of Brock award for the Faculty of Humanities.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>She was particularly involved in organizing OPIRG\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opirgbrock.com\/the-free-store\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Free Store<\/a>, which aims to find new homes for unwanted goods. The group collects donated items in good quality and redistributes them for free through the store.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tried to educate myself about my privilege and work that knowledge into a lot of the work I was doing at Brock and my approach to scholarship,\u201d she says. \u201cI have a lot of privilege, so why not use that to work with organizations and help people with less privilege?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bruce came to Brock planning to study Biology but switched to Classics her first year. She has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/04\/ancient-greek-latin-learning-aided-by-peer-mentorship-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">peer mentor<\/a> in the Department of Classics for the past two years, helping her fellow undergraduate students with essay writing and Greek and Latin languages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy favourite part of being at Brock has always been the Classics department,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s always been such an open and welcoming place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bruce was inspired by the department\u2019s enthusiasm for their subjects, and especially enjoyed her Latin classes.
