{"id":58796,"date":"2019-06-14T09:42:09","date_gmt":"2019-06-14T13:42:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=58796"},"modified":"2019-06-14T16:17:55","modified_gmt":"2019-06-14T20:17:55","slug":"brock-research-explores-strengths-and-challenges-in-niagaras-agribusiness-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/06\/brock-research-explores-strengths-and-challenges-in-niagaras-agribusiness-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock research explores strengths and challenges in Niagara\u2019s agribusiness sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The agribusiness sector in Niagara runs the full spectrum from basic operations to high-end industrial processes and from world-renowned viticulture to cash crop, dairy farms and greenhouses growing flowers, fruit, vegetables and, more recently, cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>The region\u2019s $1.4-billion annual agribusiness sector is world-class by any standard when looking at its assets and strengths.<\/p>\n<p>But Niagara shouldn\u2019t be complacent about past successes, says new research coming out of Brock University\u2019s Niagara Community Observatory (NCO) in collaboration with the Niagara Region Economic Development Division.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKey to a sector\u2019s success is the ability to link to other sectors through research and innovation,\u201d says NCO Director Charles Conteh. \u201cSynergies among Niagara\u2019s agribusiness, manufacturing and tourism sectors will enhance Niagara\u2019s economy, ensuring that the region is resilient and adaptable in the face of change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Conteh is the author of the NCO\u2019s latest policy brief, \u201cNiagara\u2019s Agribusiness Sector: Towards a More Resilient Innovation Cluster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The brief provides a portrait of recent trends in the sector in Niagara relative to similar mid-sized regions elsewhere in southern Ontario. It then discusses how to further leverage the potential of agribusiness and address existing problems in pursuit of greater resilience and adaptability.<\/p>\n<p>Conteh will be presenting the brief Tuesday, June 18 at 9:30 a.m. at the Meridian Community Centre in Pelham.
