{"id":58792,"date":"2019-06-14T12:46:09","date_gmt":"2019-06-14T16:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=58792"},"modified":"2019-06-14T16:18:34","modified_gmt":"2019-06-14T20:18:34","slug":"computer-science-grad-earns-highest-academic-standing-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/06\/computer-science-grad-earns-highest-academic-standing-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Computer Science grad earns highest academic standing award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Adam Tonet isn\u2019t one to procrastinate, so finding out very late that he had won a major academic award from Brock University was somewhat ironic.<\/p>\n<p>It wasn\u2019t until he walked into the gowning room Friday, June 14 to pick up his Convocation robe that he was made aware he\u2019d won the Governor General\u2019s Gold Medal Award, given to the graduate student with the highest academic average for 2018-19. He finished his master&#8217;s with a 96 per cent average.<\/p>\n<p>The 24-year-old Niagara Falls native was pleasantly surprised, as were his parents who didn\u2019t find out until he was called up on stage to receive the award at the end of the Faculty of Mathematics and Science Spring Convocation ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very proud and I\u2019m sure my parents are proud,\u201d said Tonet, who earned similar grades while taking his undergraduate degree in Computer Science at Brock prior to starting his master\u2019s two years ago. \u201cInstead of just writing code and solving problems, I had to write a lot more reports for my master\u2019s. I guess professors liked my writing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Tonet said working hard in school has always been a priority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people aren\u2019t as into it, but I was always the type who would start on something early when I was given an assignment,\u201d he said. \u201cIf I have problems, I get questions in early and that has served me well so far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for what comes next, Tonet hopes to land a job as a design lead for a computer software company.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought about a PhD, but I\u2019ve been in school since I was four years old, so I thought it was time for a change.
