{"id":58247,"date":"2019-05-29T11:56:41","date_gmt":"2019-05-29T15:56:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=58247"},"modified":"2019-05-29T16:24:39","modified_gmt":"2019-05-29T20:24:39","slug":"student-researchers-get-federal-funding-boost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/05\/student-researchers-get-federal-funding-boost\/","title":{"rendered":"Student researchers get federal funding boost"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does the mood you\u2019re in influence the way you see the world? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thanks to a prestigious scholarship from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Brent Pitchford will continue his quest to find out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second-year Psychology PhD student is one of six graduate students and 14 faculty researchers at Brock who <a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/05\/brock-university-awarded-2-2-million-in-nserc-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">received a total $2.2 million in NSERC funding<\/a> announced Tuesday, May 21.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pitchford\u2019s research studies how personality, motivation and emotion can influence attentional focus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m interested in determining if people\u2019s attentional scope narrows or broadens after completing a demanding cognitive self-control task, and whether this differs depending on individual differences in motivation and the rewarding nature of the stimuli presented,\u201d he said. \u201cFor example, when looking at a forest, some people see the forest as a whole, and some people see the individual trees, and this can be influenced by the mood they are in.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the experiments Pitchford is currently running involves showing people a motivating or positive stimulus, such as a piece of cake, after they have just worked through a draining self-control task to see whether they are focused more on the forest or the trees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI use an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electroencephalogram <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to measure brainwave activity, which can tell us about how they are processing the images they\u2019re shown,\u201d he said. \u201cFindings from this research may help us better understand how self-control can influence subsequent cognitive processes and influence everyday attention and behaviour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The $105,000 prize, paid over three years, has helped Pitchford to feel confident in his role as a PhD student.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWinning the NSERC award is exhilarating but terrifying at the same time,\u201d he said. \u201cTo have this validation that my research matters and is important is a great honour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pitchford offered thanks to his supervisor, Psychology Professor Karen Arnell, for her support, as well as his mother who has been a \u201cbig part\u201d of his success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cProfessor Arnell has helped me immensely,\u201d he said. \u201cShe has helped to develop my ideas and taught me how to collect and analyze data that is appropriate for academic psychology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arnell also sings Pitchford\u2019s praises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt has been such a pleasure to work with Brent,\u201d she said. \u201cHis research brings together so many constructs, and uses a wide variety of methods and measures. He has done an incredible job at becoming highly skilled in these various areas. It is very rewarding to work with students such as Brent who bring new and exciting ideas to the lab and a fresh energy to their research.
