{"id":58204,"date":"2019-05-28T11:40:16","date_gmt":"2019-05-28T15:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=58204"},"modified":"2019-06-04T09:02:40","modified_gmt":"2019-06-04T13:02:40","slug":"brock-researcher-honoured-by-the-austrian-academy-of-sciences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/05\/brock-researcher-honoured-by-the-austrian-academy-of-sciences\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock researcher honoured by the Austrian Academy of Sciences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock Applied Linguistics Professor Gary Libben has been elected as a Corresponding Member to the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oeaw.ac.at\/en\/austrian-academy-of-sciences\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austrian Academy of Sciences.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>He received the prestigious designation at a ceremony in Vienna on May 10.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am extremely honoured by this,\u201d said Libben, Chair of Brock\u2019s Department of Applied Linguistics. \u201cThe Austrian Academy of Sciences is a truly wonderful organization whose mission it is to promote science in every way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Libben was one of six non-Austrian members, and the only non-European member, elected this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He has a long-standing association with the Austrian Academy of Sciences, that country\u2019s leading non-university institution for science and research focusing on knowledge transfer and basic research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Austrian Academy of Sciences is an official partner in the Words in the World international language research project Libben created with funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Libben has also been a visiting professor several times at the Department of Linguistics at the University of Vienna, where he has ongoing collaborations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have the pleasure of working with wonderful colleagues and students in Vienna,\u201d says Libben. \u201cWhen I cannot visit in person, we hold regular Skype meetings. Those meetings bring together students at Brock and University of Vienna, which I think is a great opportunity on both sides.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key to this kind of work, says Libben, is a sustained research partnership. He gives the example of his collaboration with his University of Vienna colleague,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ae-info.org\/ae\/Member\/Dressler_Wolfgang\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor of Linguistics Wolfgang Dressler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSo far, he and I have published 16 papers together,\u201d says Libben. \u201cThe majority of those papers have included students as co-authors. Our most recent work, presented last year at the annual meeting of the Canadian Linguistics Association, has two Brock students and three University of Vienna students as co-authors.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Libben\u2019s recognition by the Austrian Academy of Sciences follows his receipt of the National Achievement Award from the Canadian Linguistics Association in 2017. He is Director of the Words in the World SSHRC Partnership Grant and has been a member of the Royal Society of Canada since 2008. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel myself to be extremely privileged,\u201d says Libben. \u201cI work with fantastic students and colleagues from whom I get to learn new things every day and have the opportunity to break new ground on both pure and applied language research.
