{"id":58179,"date":"2019-05-27T10:59:48","date_gmt":"2019-05-27T14:59:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=58179"},"modified":"2021-04-22T11:40:21","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T15:40:21","slug":"new-course-connects-students-with-niagaras-francophone-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/05\/new-course-connects-students-with-niagaras-francophone-community\/","title":{"rendered":"New course connects students with Niagara\u2019s francophone community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock students are gaining valuable work experience through a new internship opportunity that is helping to strengthen bonds with the local francophone community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The internship course provides the University\u2019s French majors with the chance to \u201cwork in an authentic francophone environment, putting into practice what they learn in the classroom,\u201d said Jean Ntakirutimana, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures. \u201cIt is also an excellent way of strengthening relationships between Brock and the francophone communities of our region, in line with Brock\u2019s mandate of being an academic institution within the community.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fourth-year French and Concurrent Education student Ashley DeSimone was the first student to complete the course this past semester. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having previously participated in the Canadian government\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myexplore.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explore<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program, which had her living and studying in Quebec for five weeks, DeSimone was aware of the immense benefits of practising language skills in an immersion setting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI know if I\u2019m not using my French, I\u2019m not improving it. So for me, I know if at least once a week I\u2019m going somewhere where I have to think and speak and work in French, it\u2019s going to help,\u201d DeSimone said. \u201cThe point of getting a French degree is to be able to speak French.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DeSimone worked with SOFIFRAN (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sofifran.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solidarit\u00e9 des femmes et familles interconnect\u00e9es francophones du Niagara<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) for 50 hours over the course of the Winter Term. Based in Welland, the community organization is led by francophone women and supports immigrant women and their families with cultural, economic, educational and social services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to office work and welcoming clients, De Simone helped behind the scenes with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/blogs\/humanities\/2019\/02\/25\/celebrate-african-heritage-month-with-multilingual-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masques, Mythes et Mascarades\/ Masks, Myths and Masquerades<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The multi-site exhibition of African masks for African Heritage Month was a collaboration between SOFIFRAN, the Department of Modern Languages and Rodman Hall Art Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working with Niagara\u2019s immigrant community increased DeSimone\u2019s own intercultural awareness, a trend she hopes to see continue across the region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need more cultural awareness in Niagara,\u201d she said. \u201cOur region is becoming more diverse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DeSimone found the team at SOFIFRAN very encouraging and supportive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019m naturally a quieter kind of person, but through working with them, they encouraged me and didn\u2019t care if I made mistakes. By the end of the term, I was fine writing a draft of a report to be submitted to government,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs you stay in a francophone environment, you get more used to it. By the end of it, my comfort was completely different.
