In hopes of giving local teens a leg up, Brock is teaching them how to balance their books before they reach university.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, May 23, Brock welcomed Grade 10 students from Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School in St. Catharines for its second Financial Literacy Day. The free event featured speakers from the Credit Counselling Society and the University\u2019s Student Awards and Financial Aid office.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_58171\" style=\"width: 407px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58171\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-58171\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Financial-Literacy-Day-4-RS-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"397\" height=\"265\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-58171\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock University Student Financial Services Officer Brian Scriver spoke to local high school students about managing money in post-secondary and the costs of attending university.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Through a series of presentations and interactive games, students learned saving tips and tricks; how to manage money and build credit; as well as the costs and funding options for post-secondary education.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is stuff they don\u2019t really teach in schools,\u201d said Grade 10 student Austin White. \u201cI\u2019ve learned a little bit from my parents because I have a part-time job, but today I learned a lot, like how to track expenses so you don\u2019t go into debt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>White\u2019s classmate, Moustafa Mohamad, was interested in learning more about funding options such as student awards, loans, lines of credit and OSAP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt can be difficult, especially if you\u2019re not in a great financial situation, to support yourself through university,\u201d Mohamad said. \u201cI need all the information I can get. Learning about student loans, how to control credit and get a great credit score was very valuable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brock Student Financial Services Officer Audrianna Kervoelen said that financial barriers are among the top reasons why students don\u2019t graduate university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPost-secondary education is an investment,\u201d she said. \u201cWe want to educate students while they\u2019re still in high school so they can mentally and physically prepare for their future. When they enter university with a better understanding of financial well-being, literacy and knowledge, they\u2019re more likely to continue their studies and graduate.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_58168\" style=\"width: 1060px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58168\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-58168\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Financial-Literacy-Day-1-RS-1050x831.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1050\" height=\"831\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-58168\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More than 75 Grade 10 students from Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School in St. Catharines visited Brock University Thursday, May 23 to learn about financial literacy, a skill not often taught formally in high schools or post-secondary.<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Managing your finances can be a daunting task at any age.
