{"id":58138,"date":"2019-05-23T13:46:06","date_gmt":"2019-05-23T17:46:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=58138"},"modified":"2019-05-23T16:32:08","modified_gmt":"2019-05-23T20:32:08","slug":"dramatic-arts-grad-gets-rave-reviews-in-soulpeppers-the-brothers-size","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/05\/dramatic-arts-grad-gets-rave-reviews-in-soulpeppers-the-brothers-size\/","title":{"rendered":"Dramatic Arts grad gets rave reviews in Soulpepper&#8217;s The Brothers Size"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/entertainment\/entertainment\/review-mccraney-s-brothers-size-rocks-the-stage-with-spectacle-heart\/article\/549591\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reviews<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are in, and Brock Dramatic Arts alumnus<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcel Stewart (BA \u201907) is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.broadwayworld.com\/toronto\/article\/BWW-Review-Familial-Bonds-and-Tradition-Ground-THE-BROTHERS-SIZE-in-Moving-Production-20190511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earning praise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for his performance in what the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/entertainment\/stage\/2019\/05\/12\/review-the-brothers-size-a-performance-of-softness-humour-and-mystery.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toronto Star<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calls a \u201cstunning Canadian premiere.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stewart stars as Elegba in<\/span><em><a href=\"https:\/\/soulpepper.ca\/performances\/the-brothers-size\/6178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brothers Size<\/span><\/a><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the newest offering from Toronto-based production house<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/soulpepper.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soulpepper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He describes the experience as a \u201cwhirlwind,\u201d especially after Toronto-based rapper Drake made a surprise appearance at the May 10 opening night performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_58142\" style=\"width: 434px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58142\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-58142\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Marcel-Stewart-Brothers-Size-2-1050x693.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"424\" height=\"280\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-58142\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock Dramatic Arts alumnus Marcel Stewart (BA &#8217;07), second from right, and his castmates from The Brothers Size got a surprise visit from rapper Drake, third from right, at the opening night performance of the Toronto show.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt has been amazing; it\u2019s such a gift to do something like this,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cThrough my whole journey as an actor, I have wanted to work on a play that speaks to my experience, one that I can easily dive into, and this text was so comfortable it was like putting on a jacket that was made for me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brothers Size<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the second play in the Brothers\/Sisters series, written by Oscar-winning screenwriter and Tony Award-nominated playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Set in a fictional town in Louisiana, it tells the story of two brothers, Ogun and Oshoosi,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">who find themselves living together after Oshoosi\u2019s release from prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stewart plays Oshoosi\u2019s best friend, who formed a bond with him during their incarceration together. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think on a micro level, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brothers Size<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is about the experience of black men today in the world,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cBut on the macro level, what the characters go through are things that all people experience: grief, trauma and searching for a sense of belonging.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stewart\u2019s performance marks his return to the Soulpepper stage, where he has previously performed three times and was a member of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www1.soulpepper.ca\/about-us\/the-company\/soulpepper-academy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soulpepper Academy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of his other credits include the role of Miles in <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Drawer Boy<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at Prince Edward County\u2019s Festival Players, Coutts in the Mirvish Theatre Production of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">King Charles III<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Toronto, and roles on popular Canadian television series\u2019 <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kim\u2019s Convenience <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Murdoch Mysteries<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While he focused primarily on acting for several years after graduation, Stewart also developed a passion for doing outreach work and giving back to young, aspiring actors.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_58143\" style=\"width: 257px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58143\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-58143\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Marcel-Stewart-839x1050.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"247\" height=\"309\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-58143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock Dramatic Arts alumnus Marcel Stewart (BA \u201907).<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When he\u2019s not on stage, he gives private acting lessons and hosts workshops in communities across Canada. He\u2019s worked with school groups at the Toronto International Film Festival, for example, and was the creator of What Noise is This, a workshop that explores William Shakespeare\u2019s canon through the lens of hip-hop music.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stewart is also involved in the local theatre industry, both as the outreach co-ordinator with St. Catharines theatre company<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/suitcaseinpoint.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suitcase in Point<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the volunteer co-ordinator for the upcoming<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/inthesoil.on.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In The Soil Arts Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, taking place this June in downtown St. Catharines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock Assistant Theatre Professor Danielle Wilson offered her congratulations on Stewart\u2019s success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMarcel was bright and hungry to learn and is an example of the breadth of career opportunities that become available after studying in DART,\u201d she said. \u201cWe congratulate him on his success as a working artist and are very proud of the contributions he has made in the theatre community over the years.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stewart attributes his ability to \u201cwear many hats\u201d in his career to the skills he gained from studying at Brock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe \u2018motor\u2019 that I developed at Brock was probably my biggest takeaway that I still rely on 12 years later,\u201d the 33-year-old said. \u201cTo keep going, to keep pursuing, and if a door is closed in my face, then there\u2019s 10 more doors that I can open.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the wrap of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brothers Size <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Toronto, Stewart is headed back to work in St. Catharines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He wants to continue his outreach work and bring more eclectic and diverse artists to St. Catharines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He said instructors at Brock encouraged him to explore his sense of self and find cultural connections through the performing arts \u2014 and he wants to do the same for others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy experience at Brock helped open me up to recognizing who I am as a black man and encouraged me use that voice and speak from my perspective whenever I can,\u201d he said. \u201cNow I\u2019m on this representation kick, running workshops, doing outreach and looking at how to bring some more colour \u2014 in more ways than one \u2014 to the artistic landscape.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brothers Size<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> runs until Saturday, June 1 at the Young Centre for the Performing Arts at 50 Tank House Lane in Toronto.
