{"id":58041,"date":"2019-05-16T12:45:07","date_gmt":"2019-05-16T16:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=58041"},"modified":"2019-05-16T14:23:22","modified_gmt":"2019-05-16T18:23:22","slug":"sports-injury-and-return-to-play-expertise-available-at-new-brock-sports-medicine-clinic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/05\/sports-injury-and-return-to-play-expertise-available-at-new-brock-sports-medicine-clinic\/","title":{"rendered":"Sports injury and return-to-play expertise available at new Brock Sports Medicine Clinic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brock University\u2019s growing performance culture has sprouted a modern sports therapy clinic.<\/p>\n<p>The new Brock Sports Medicine Clinic located at Harrison Hall offers a wide range of medical experts and technology to treat injuries, enhance recovery and return athletes safely back to sport.<\/p>\n<p>The clinic is open to all students, faculty, staff and community members, and can be used in conjunction with employee benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Associate Director of Brock Sports Performance Steve Lidstone says the power of Brock Sports Medicine (BSM) lies in the expertise of its employees.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_58037\" style=\"width: 446px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-58037\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-58037\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/Brock-Sports-med-2-RS-1050x700.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"436\" height=\"291\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-58037\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock volleyball players Marcelo Correa and Grace Pyatt are put through the paces during an athletic therapy session with Brock Sports Medicine Assistant Head Athletic Therapist Jim Bilotta, left, and Physiotherapist Dan Caterini, right.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unrealistic to expect that one tool can be used to fix every problem, but we\u2019re home to a group of professionals who use agreed-upon principles for patient assessment, diagnosis and treatment,\u201d said Lidstone. \u201cAn integrated support team approach is vital to having multiple treatment styles used when needed for complex cases.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brock Sports Medicine is staffed with sport medicine physicians, physiatrists, athletic therapists, physiotherapists, osteopaths, massage therapists and return-to-play specialists.<\/p>\n<p>The team has experience working with athletes at major sporting events including the Olympics and Paralympics, Pan American Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships and World University Games.<\/p>\n<p>Lidstone, who has consulted and worked as part of strength and conditioning for Canada\u2019s national teams in various sports, is excited to grow and expand on the excellence of Brock\u2019s athletic therapy history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoy having a vision of excellence formed through my years of experience in university and national team sport,\u201d said Lidstone, who has been mentored by some of the top orthopaedic rehabilitation and strength and conditioning professionals. \u201cMy passion is now centred upon performance culture, facility design and staff development. It is an extremely rewarding experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Supporting Brock\u2019s focus on experiential education, more than 90 placements for the University\u2019s undergraduate and grad students are available each year through Brock Sports Medicine and Brock Sports Performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe partnership between the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences and the Brock Sports Medicine Clinic is vitally important in providing our Kinesiology students with practical, hands-on experiential education opportunities that are major components of their learning,\u201d said Faculty of Applied Health Sciences Dean Peter Tiidus.<\/p>\n<p>The Brock Sports Medicine Clinic is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. To book an appointment, call 905-688-5550 x3791.
