{"id":57699,"date":"2019-04-26T15:42:53","date_gmt":"2019-04-26T19:42:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=57699"},"modified":"2019-05-06T13:55:49","modified_gmt":"2019-05-06T17:55:49","slug":"student-researcher-explores-future-of-electric-buses-in-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/04\/student-researcher-explores-future-of-electric-buses-in-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Student researcher explores future of electric buses in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a simple, logical way to cut down on air and noise pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Electric buses don\u2019t emit carbon or use fossil fuels, are low cost to maintain and, by the silent way they operate, reduce noise pollution compared to conventional buses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But replacing current buses with electricity-powered ones is easier said than done, says master\u2019s student Tasnuva Afreen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afreen recently wrapped up an eight-month internship with the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cutric-crituc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian Urban Transit Research and Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to collect and interpret information related to transit authorities\u2019 transition to electric buses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNow we\u2019re trying to connect the dots,\u201d says Afreen, who is in Brock\u2019s Sustainability Science and Society program. \u201cWe hope to bring out what Canadians think of electric buses and identify the main barriers to bringing electric buses to transit authorities\u2019 fleets.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afreen, Associate Professor of Geography and Tourism Studies<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=e0q9tV_Rpto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christopher Fullerton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and CUTRIC created the internship through the not-for-profit national research organization<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitacs.ca\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitacs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitacs partners with academics, private industry and governments to conduct research and training programs related to industrial and social innovation. The organization funds a number of research projects at Brock University.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During her internship, Afreen organized consultations with industry representatives, transit authorities, government officials and academic researchers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She and her CUTRIC colleagues asked participants a series of questions about transit authorities\u2019 experiences and challenges of experimenting with electric buses and the knowledge they need to acquire and integrate hydrogen fuel cell vehicles into their fleets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afreen also asked transit riders to share their opinions on and experiences with electric buses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She then transcribed the consultation sessions and analyzed the comments. Afreen also gathered information on how to test electric buses in nine municipalities that expressed interest in becoming demonstration trial sites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although she and Fullerton are still analyzing the data, Afreen says her preliminary results show that there\u2019s much interest in putting electric buses on the road.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But there are a number of barriers to overcome, she says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMunicipalities have to redesign their infrastructure to provide electric lines so that buses can recharge very quickly,\u201d says Afreen. \u201cAlso, the upfront expense is huge \u2014 a lot of transit agencies don\u2019t have the money in their pocket to go for this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fullerton, Afreen\u2019s supervisor, says the research she conducted will lay the groundwork for CUTRIC\u2019s efforts to encourage the adoption of electric buses across Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhile it has already demonstrated clear environmental, social and economic benefits in other parts of the world, electric bus technology is still relatively new and adopting it represents a major funding commitment,\u201d says Fullerton.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPublic transit agencies and other stakeholders, such as the various levels of government that provide subsidies for transit infrastructure, want to make sure that the technology is reliable and that their money is well spent,\u201d he says, adding that Afreen\u2019s work helps identify stakeholders\u2019 concerns and information needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Afreen will share her Mitacs-supported internship experience at Brock\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/graduate-studies\/conferences-events\/shift\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shift Conference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tuesday, April 30 and the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/graduate-studies\/launch-conference-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launch Forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Wednesday, May 1.
