{"id":57613,"date":"2019-04-23T12:08:30","date_gmt":"2019-04-23T16:08:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=57613"},"modified":"2019-04-23T12:08:30","modified_gmt":"2019-04-23T16:08:30","slug":"brock-prof-receives-national-recognition-for-poetry-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/04\/brock-prof-receives-national-recognition-for-poetry-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock prof receives national recognition for poetry book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latest book by Brock Associate Professor of English Adam Dickinson has earned a place in the national spotlight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Anatomic<\/em> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is one of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">six<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> books shortlisted for the League of Canadian Poets\u2019 2019 Raymond Souster Award. The literary prize is presented to what is considered by judges the best work of poetry by a Canadian poet in the previous year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dickinson\u2019s work merges poetry and science, exploring the impact environmental pollution has on the human body. His poetry examines how people view each other and the world by bringing together materials and approaches of science and literature.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am delighted to be shortlisted for this award and I am grateful for the support of my colleagues, particularly Jeff Stuart and Alison Waller in Biology, Ana Sanchez and Litsa Tsiani in Health Sciences, and Heather Gordon in Chemistry,\u201d says Dickinson.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI am, of course, also grateful for the support and encouragement of my colleagues in the English Department, and to my creative writing students who constantly inspire me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dickinson\u2019s work explores areas of language that don\u2019t usually belong to poetry, in particular, the language of science. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His research for <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anatomic<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> included extensive scientific analysis of his own body to measure the microbes and chemicals that infiltrate the human body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not the first time Dickinson\u2019s work has been recognized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His poem <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Metabolites<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/12\/brock-prof-who-mixes-science-with-poetry-shortlisted-for-2016-cbc-poetry-prize\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shortlisted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the 2016 CBC Poetry Prize. Three of his previous books of poetry have also been nominated for provincial and national awards, including <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Polymers<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was shortlisted for a Governor General\u2019s Award for English Language Poetry in 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The League of Canadian Poets was established in 1966 to celebrate and support poets and poetry in Canada. The Raymond Souster Award is given for a book of poetry by a member of the League of Canadian Poets.
