{"id":57476,"date":"2019-04-15T15:05:26","date_gmt":"2019-04-15T19:05:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=57476"},"modified":"2019-04-15T17:20:12","modified_gmt":"2019-04-15T21:20:12","slug":"david-siegel-will-leave-lasting-legacy-upon-retirement-from-brock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/04\/david-siegel-will-leave-lasting-legacy-upon-retirement-from-brock\/","title":{"rendered":"David Siegel will leave lasting legacy upon retirement from Brock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When David Siegel retires this June after more than 40 years of service to Brock University, he will leave a lasting impact felt in many areas across campus and in the Niagara community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To celebrate his career and ongoing contributions, a reception is planned for Thursday, April 18.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siegel joined Brock\u2019s Department of Political Science as a lecturer in 1978, later gaining tenure and promotion to full professor. In the decades since, he has held multiple positions within the University, both academic and administrative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou\u2019re not going to find many people at Brock with that kind of portfolio of experience,\u201d says Paul Hamilton, Chair of the Department of Political Science.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_57489\" style=\"width: 392px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57489\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-57489\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/David-Siegel-and-Joe-Kushner-1050x689.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"382\" height=\"251\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-57489\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In this photo from Brock University&#8217;s archives, Professors David Siegel and Joe Kushner are shown readying to present a paper together on amalgamation and citizen satisfaction in 2001.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to teaching, Siegel has served as Chair of Political Science (1987-88, 1989-91) Associate Vice-President, Academic (1995-99), and Dean of two Faculties: Social Sciences (2002-08) and Education (2015-17).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t think that\u2019s ever happened at Brock before,\u201d says Hamilton, adding that with Siegel\u2019s vast experience at the University and knowledge of public administration \u201che could have been the Dean of any number of Faculties. It just happened that Education needed someone.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During his time in Education, Siegel made an impression as an \u201cattentive listener, as someone who made and accepted responsibility for tough decisions, and as an approachable, supportive and forward-thinking Dean,\u201d says Ren\u00e9e Kuchapski, Associate Professor of Education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlthough he was from Political Science, not Education, Professor Siegel participated fully in the Faculty and remained quietly focused on improving the student experience,\u201d Kuchapski says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Department of Political Science wishes Siegel the best in his retirement, his colleagues will be sad to see him go when he has his last day at the University June 30.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHis work is essentially part of our work,\u201d says Hamilton. He specifically points<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to the Niagara Community Observatory (NCO) as Siegel\u2019s legacy at Brock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2008, Siegel served as founding director of the NCO, an institute devoted to research on the Niagara area.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Associate Professor of Political Science Charles Conteh, who now heads the observatory, taking over from Siegel has been a privilege and a challenge. He watched with admiration as Siegel fostered collaborative community-based research networks in and beyond Niagara.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe brought to these networks an uncompromising commitment to producing objective, credible evidence-based research to support community-based decision-making,\u201d says Conteh. \u201cUnder David Siegel\u2019s leadership, the NCO became a highly engaged and visible think-tank working in partnership with the Niagara community to foster, produce and disseminate research on current and emerging issues.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Siegel\u2019s vision and leadership \u201ccontinue to heavily influence the NCO\u2019s mission and activities,\u201d Conteh says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dean of Social Sciences Ingrid Makus met Siegel many years ago when the pair became colleagues in the Department of Political Science. They have since crossed paths in their various administrative roles.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve learned a lot from him. He has such a wealth of experience navigating all aspects of university life,\u201d Makus says. \u201cDave Siegel has excelled in all his roles \u2014 as a professor, teacher, researcher, administrator, mentor and colleague \u2014 consistently demonstrating his passionate commitment to the University\u2019s mission.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conteh describes Siegel\u2019s University career as \u201can excellent embodiment of Brock\u2019s strategic commitment to community engagement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current and former Brock students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the reception in Siegel&#8217;s honour on Thursday, April 18 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Pond Inlet.
