Yet Canada is not meeting its childhood-vaccination targets,\u00a0with almost the lowest coverage of all OECD countries.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>High vaccination coverage is necessary to protect public health via what\u2019s known as\u00a0herd immunity. And vaccines are regarded as among our most\u00a0cost-effective public health measures. Some argue that children themselves\u00a0have a right to be vaccinated\u00a0to protect against\u00a0sometimes fatal\u00a0diseases.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Mandatory vaccination of schoolchildren, for which only medical exemptions would be permitted, is gaining traction in Canada\u00a0as it is elsewhere, with a\u00a0strong majority\u00a0of Canadians indicating\u00a0their approval.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Currently, Canada has no such mandates, although the\u00a0Alberta Party has pledged one\u00a0if elected on April 16. Ontario and New Brunswick have vaccination\u00a0reporting\u00a0laws.
