{"id":57268,"date":"2019-04-05T15:18:23","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T19:18:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=57268"},"modified":"2019-04-05T15:18:23","modified_gmt":"2019-04-05T19:18:23","slug":"brock-volunteers-needed-for-habitat-build-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/04\/brock-volunteers-needed-for-habitat-build-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock volunteers needed for Habitat build"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock University is looking for faculty and staff willing to roll up their sleeves to make a difference in the lives of two local families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 12-person team from the University will join forces with Habitat for Humanity Niagara to help build a two-unit semi-detached house on Bellevue Street in Niagara Falls. Participants can choose to frame walls on Wednesday, May 29 or paint walls and trim on Wednesday, July 24, each from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No previous experience is required as training and professional direction will be provided. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock has been partnering with Habitat for Humanity on housing builds for five years locally and eight years internationally.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_57269\" style=\"width: 352px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57269\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-57269\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Habitat-for-Humanity-Erin-Plyley-RS-853x1050.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"342\" height=\"421\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-57269\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Erin Plyley, Case Manager for Brock University\u2019s Student Accessibility Services, helped paint walls as part of Habitat for Humanity Niagara\u2019s build in December 2017.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a great learning experience,\u201d said Erin Plyley, Case Manager for Student Accessibility Services, who volunteered with Brock\u2019s team in December 2017. \u201cThe Habitat team was so encouraging and the group of employees I volunteered with were so much fun. It\u2019s amazing how much you can accomplish in one day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to working alongside volunteers and professional tradespeople, participants will likely also work with the homeowners, who often contribute sweat equity into the construction of their new house.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI loved meeting the homeowners and learning more about their stories,\u201d said Plyley. \u201cIt\u2019s rewarding seeing first-hand the impact of your volunteer efforts.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habitat for Humanity Niagara selects families who are ready for the responsibility and challenges of homeownership, but do not qualify for a bank mortgage. In addition to other requirements, homeowners must volunteer 500 hours with Habitat in exchange for purchasing a house without a down payment and with an interest-free mortgage geared toward their income.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The semi-detached house Brock volunteers will be framing and painting will provide two large, local families with safe, comfortable and stable housing. It will allow<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/g\/United-Way\/ER6OwqOpDdJIkMhsx9fUkGgBlB2jNkDb-GpcGJD5dLmZSg?e=50kvUy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yaqub and Nimo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to exchange overcrowded rental conditions for an affordable and comfortable place to live with their seven children. Home ownership will also provide<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.sharepoint.com\/:b:\/g\/United-Way\/EWCdXJWYTNxGnZpLqq3QUjMBifUbZXZYOaNSTeL3i3-p2g?e=j7wfhU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mohamed and Sabida<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the opportunity to build equity and a positive future for their eight children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staff and faculty interested in being part of the Brock Habitat team are asked to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/experiencebu.brocku.ca\/submitter\/form\/start\/13153\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">submit an expression of interest online<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Friday, April 12. Interested parties will then be entered into a lottery for the available team spots. Successful participants will be notified the week of Monday, April 15.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each participant must raise a minimum of $400 towards the Brock team\u2019s $6,000 goal. All funds will directly support the Habitat build. Volunteers must also provide their own transportation to Niagara Falls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habitat for Humanity promotes home ownership as a means to break the cycle of poverty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the past 26 years, Habitat Niagara has served 71 families, including 258 children.
