{"id":57254,"date":"2019-04-05T10:19:10","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T14:19:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=57254"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:55:50","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:55:50","slug":"tusikov-and-haggart-stop-outsourcing-the-regulation-of-hate-speech-to-social-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/04\/tusikov-and-haggart-stop-outsourcing-the-regulation-of-hate-speech-to-social-media\/","title":{"rendered":"TUSIKOV AND HAGGART: Stop outsourcing the regulation of hate speech to social media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Blayne Haggart, Associate Professor of Political Science at Brock, co-wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/stop-outsourcing-the-regulation-of-hate-speech-to-social-media-114276\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piece recently published in\u00a0<em>The Conversation<\/em><\/a> alongside\u00a0Natasha Tusikov, Assistant Professor of Criminology at York University, about the regulation of hate speech.<\/p>\n<p>Haggart and Tusikov write:<\/p>\n<p><em>When it comes to dealing with online hate speech, we\u2019ve ended up in the worst of all possible worlds.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>On the one hand, you have social media platforms like Facebook\u00a0and Twitter\u00a0that seem extremely reluctant to ban white supremacists and actual neo-Nazis, but enthusiastically enforce their own capricious terms of service to keep adults safe from such harmful things as\u00a0the female nipple.
