{"id":57183,"date":"2019-04-02T14:06:40","date_gmt":"2019-04-02T18:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=57183"},"modified":"2019-04-02T14:06:40","modified_gmt":"2019-04-02T18:06:40","slug":"brock-alumna-honoured-for-excellence-in-music-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/04\/brock-alumna-honoured-for-excellence-in-music-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock alumna honoured for excellence in music education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock piano instructor and alumna Christina Le Rose (BA \u201907, Bed \u201910) has been recognized by the Niagara Symphony Orchestra (NSO) for her longstanding commitment to inspiring young musicians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le Rose was named as the winner of the<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.niagarasymphony.com\/about-us\/latest-news\/nso-announces-winner-of-the-2018-paul-van-dongen-award:31\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 Paul van Dongen Memorial Award for Excellence in Music Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which recognizes an outstanding teacher of music at the elementary level and the impact that teachers of the arts have on students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The award was established in 2017 as part of the Champion of the Arts initiative. It is presented annually in honour of the late van Dongen, who was a conductor, music educator and long-time member of the NSO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I am extremely honoured and profoundly humbled to receive the Paul van Dongen Memorial Award for Excellence in Music Education,\u201d Le Rose said. \u201cBeing recognized as a champion of the arts further inspires me to continue Mr. van Dongen\u2019s outstanding legacy of music education through both teaching and performing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Le Rose was given the award for her work with the Niagara Catholic District School Board (NCDSB), where she is an itinerant arts music teacher at St. Ann and St. Martin Catholic elementary schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She has also worked for the NSO Academy and Summer Music Camp as a piano and vocal instructor, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">giving<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> private music lessons, conducting master classes, coaching chamber ensembles and preparing students for concerts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love the enthusiasm, creativity and initiative that young musicians often display and enjoy working with them because I can help cultivate their passion for and enjoyment of music,\u201d she said. \u201cHaving the opportunity to inspire, motivate and empower young students through music education is an incredible privilege for which I am truly grateful.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock Department of Music Chair Matthew Royal extended his congratulations to Le Rose for the award and her accomplishments as an educator.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChristina Le Rose is well known to us in the Department of Music, not only as an alumna of our program, but also as an excellent studio teacher of our piano students,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are delighted, but not at all surprised, that a further aspect of her teaching, namely her activities in the elementary school classroom, has also received recognition in the form of this important award from the Niagara Symphony.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock has a longstanding history of partnership and collaboration with the NSO, which includes the hosting of Brock students with the symphony, offering\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/seen-and-heard\/students-treated-to-violin-masterclass-from-renowned-musician-jonathan-crow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">masterclass opportunities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and working with students in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/09\/music-majors-to-make-an-impact-in-niagara\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock Music Practicum course<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock is also the NSO\u2019s new<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arts in Niagara sponsor, which will contribute to the overall operations of the symphony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Niagara Symphony Orchestra Music Director Bradley Thachuk said it is an honour to celebrate Le Rose\u2019s efforts with this award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Niagara Symphony Orchestra\u2019s ongoing commitment to music education is reinforced by the work of gifted music educators in schools across Niagara,\u201d he said. \u201cChristina Le Rose is noted for a willingness to incorporate music across the curriculum.
