{"id":57168,"date":"2019-04-01T15:06:44","date_gmt":"2019-04-01T19:06:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=57168"},"modified":"2019-04-01T17:08:50","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T21:08:50","slug":"goodman-club-executives-earn-national-recognition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/04\/goodman-club-executives-earn-national-recognition\/","title":{"rendered":"Goodman club executives earn national recognition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goodman School of Business student leaders have received top honours from the Canadian Association of Business Students (CABS).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sorcha Killian, a fourth-year double-degree student from Dublin City University in Ireland, was named the association\u2019s All-Star Executive of the Year for her accomplishments as Vice-President of Corporate Relations with the Goodman Business Students\u2019 Association (BSA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Canadian Association of Business Students also awarded the Brock Finance and Investment Group (BFIG) Club of the Year.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_57169\" style=\"width: 383px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-57169\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-57169\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Brock-Finance-and-Investment-Group.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"373\" height=\"214\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-57169\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock Finance and Investment Group\u2019s 2018-19 executive was recently awarded the Canadian Association of Business Students Club of the Year honour. During her term with the BSA, Killian transformed the organization\u2019s corporate sponsorship structure, increasing funding for student events by 400 per cent, and securing multi-year partnerships with sponsors for the first time in BSA history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis award is fantastic as recognition but if I\u2019m honest, it\u2019s the friendships I&#8217;ve made within the BSA that are the true gift to me,\u201d Killian said. \u201cWhen I moved here, I was terrified of finding my place or home here. Throughout everything I\u2019ve done, I\u2019ve had the best people behind me and I couldn&#8217;t be more grateful for all of them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With her return to Ireland nearing, Killian wished for the same success for those following her in the role.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t want a legacy. I don\u2019t want people to think that\u2019s where the ball stops,\u201d she said. \u201cI want everyone who comes after me to be bigger, better and bolder.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, no one deserves the award more than Killian, says Goodman BSA President Aidan Gihula.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Sorcha is a rockstar,\u201d he said. \u201cShe is a cheerleader, the hardest worker, the most creative and the most willing to take calculated risks. Her leadership skills have blossomed this year and I cannot be prouder of her efforts and what she has accomplished.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Killian\u2019s achievement underscores the opportunities that lie on both sides of the double-degree program, noted Goodman Dean Andrew Gaudes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It speaks to our delivering a global experience that brings students from around the world into our school, and giving them the opportunity to participate fully in all the programs we offer inside and outside of the classroom,\u201d Gaudes said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gihula also lauded BFIG President Bryan Haakman and the club for its ability to turn setbacks into opportunities this year, including creating faculty partnerships that changed the club\u2019s fortunes after its student-run investment portfolio was no longer allowed to operate when government regulatory and tax changes came into place affecting similar clubs across the province.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going forward, the club will work with faculty and a class to manage nearly 10 times the amount of money it previously held.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delegates from the BFIG also won Battle on Bay, the annual finance case competition hosted by Ryerson University\u2019s Finance Society. In addition, last month the club sent a record number of members to Quinnipiac\u2019s Global Asset Management Education Forum in New York, the largest student-run financial conference in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of the things that impressed me the most while watching BFIG operate was their drive for positioning the organization to succeed,\u201d Gihula said. \u201cBryan and his team took it upon themselves to set that groundwork for years to come.
