{"id":56900,"date":"2019-03-19T15:44:29","date_gmt":"2019-03-19T19:44:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=56900"},"modified":"2019-03-21T08:14:34","modified_gmt":"2019-03-21T12:14:34","slug":"badger-women-claim-silver-at-national-curling-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/03\/badger-women-claim-silver-at-national-curling-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Badger women claim silver at national curling championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They don\u2019t call them \u2018Team Resilient\u2019 for nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brock University\u2019s women\u2019s curling team proved why they\u2019ve earned the moniker by securing a silver medal at the national university curling championships Tuesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the second consecutive year the women\u2019s squad brought home a medal from the U SPORTS Curling Championships, this time held at Willie O\u2019Ree Place in Fredericton, N.B.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur women\u2019s team has been nicknamed \u2018Team Resilient\u2019 and they remained supportive of each other throughout the game and the season,\u201d said head coach Murray Etherington. \u201cI am extremely proud of the women\u2019s efforts and competitive display today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both teams made few mistakes in the faceoff and the skips were strong with their last stones, which resulted in a low-scoring game with not a lot of big opportunities to widen the scoring gap. Laurentian never trailed, winning 7-5.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Badgers read the ice well early in the match, but Laurentian led 3-0 after the first end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe had a couple of misses in the first end that our opponents capitalized on,\u201d said Etherington. \u201cAfter that, both teams played a great game.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back-to-back sharp throws by senior skip Terri Weeks late in the second diffused all of Laurentian\u2019s plays and allowed the Badgers to keep the hammer heading into the third, where they brought the score within one (3-2).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weeks made a difficult throw to destroy the guards Laurentian built in the fourth, but the Voyageurs registered a point with a calculated throw.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voyageurs skip Kira Brunton continued to restore Laurentian\u2019s lead by two every time Brock pulled within one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holding the hammer in the ninth, Brock\u2019s first-year vice Claire Randell tossed a pair of dynamite throws to put Brock into the red, with the Badgers trailing 6-5 into the final end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur last shot hit and rolled out in the ninth end. That was unfortunate, but we made Laurentian throw their last shot to the button and Kira Brunton made a great shot to win,\u201d said Etherington. \u201cThat is really all that you can ask for.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The women\u2019s team consists of Weeks, Randell, second Marcia Richardson, lead Jillian Page, fifth Laura Henderson and alternates Sarah Bailey and Cassie Barnard. The women\u2019s assistant coach is Karen Heywood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Badgers, who curl out of the St. Catharines Golf and Country Club, enjoyed a successful curling season. The women\u2019s team went 5-2 in the round robin and overcame Queen\u2019s 6-5 in the semifinals. At the OUA championships, the women won bronze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The men\u2019s team went 2-5 at nationals and won a silver medal at the OUA championships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI know the men struggled, but I am really proud of how they competed hard in every game and then came out to support the women,\u201d Murray said. \u201cBoth teams represented Brock University with enormous pride.
