{"id":56856,"date":"2019-03-18T16:06:38","date_gmt":"2019-03-18T20:06:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=56856"},"modified":"2019-03-21T08:12:33","modified_gmt":"2019-03-21T12:12:33","slug":"campus-vigil-and-discussion-panel-to-challenge-islamophobia-promote-inclusivity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/03\/campus-vigil-and-discussion-panel-to-challenge-islamophobia-promote-inclusivity\/","title":{"rendered":"Campus vigil and discussion panel to challenge Islamophobia, promote inclusivity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members of the Brock University community will come together Tuesday to stand for inclusivity and condemn the heinous act of terrorism that ripped through New Zealand last week, killing 50 people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A vigil will be held on campus Tuesday, March 19 at noon to honour the victims who were killed and injured by a terrorist while worshipping in two mosques in Christchurch.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Held in the Scotiabank Atrium of the University\u2019s Cairns Complex, the vigil will include speakers from Brock\u2019s Office of Human Rights and Equity (HRE), the President\u2019s Advisory Committee on Human Rights, Equity and Decolonization (PACHRED), and the Muslim Students\u2019 Association (MSA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy attending this vigil, University members will make clear their commitment to being an inclusive community,\u201d said Leela MadhavaRau, Director of Brock\u2019s Office of Human Rights and Equity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is growing hatred around the world, directed toward marginalized communities, be they Indigenous, immigrants, refugees or of a different faith. Brock needs to demonstrate to all members of our community that they are truly welcome on our campus \u2014 that we are striving to live the inclusion about which we talk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After news broke of the terror attack on Friday, March 15, the vigil was announced in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/media-room\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/HRE-statement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joint statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Brock\u2019s HRE office and PACHRED. The MSA also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/media-room\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/61\/MSE-statement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">issued a message<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of support for the victims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the vigil, a discussion panel is being planned for Tuesday, March 26, also in the Scotiabank Atrium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Challenging Islamophobia will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will include several speakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confirmed to speak thus far is Zanab Jafry, who is set to graduate from Brock this spring and is now a member of Ryerson University\u2019s Equity Office. While at Brock, Jafry was involved in activism on Islamophobia and on BIPOC initiatives on sexual violence. She was also the co-ordinator of the Student Justice Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also slated to speak is History Professor Behnaz Mirzai, founder of a new Institute on Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies.
