Brock University Film Society\u2019s (BUFS) latest screening, <\/span>If Beale Street Could Talk<\/span><\/em>, is a moving celebration of love and the African-American family.<\/span><\/p>\n

The movie will hit the big screen at the Film House in downtown St. Catharines on Thursday, March 21.<\/span><\/p>\n

Based on the novel by James Baldwin, <\/span>If Beale Street Could Talk<\/span><\/em> was written and directed by Barry Jenkins (<\/span>Moonlight<\/span><\/em>) and stars KiKi Layne and Canadian-born Stephan James (<\/span>Race, Selma<\/span><\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n

The film follows Tish (Layne), a newly engaged Harlem woman, who races against the clock to prove her fianc\u00e9\u2019s (James) innocence before the birth of their first child. <\/span>Beale Street<\/span><\/em> is a celebration of love told through the story of a young couple and their families as they try to bring about justice through love, for love and the promise of the American dream.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Jenkins gets most right \u2014\u00a0what astonishes me the most about this film \u2014 is Baldwin\u2019s vast affection for the broad varieties of black life,\u201d says <\/span>Vanity Fair<\/span><\/em>.<\/em> \u201cIt\u2019s one of the signature lessons of Baldwin\u2019s work that blackness contains multitudes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Regina King (<\/span>American Crime, Jerry Maguire<\/span><\/em>) was named Best Supporting Actress at the <\/span>Academy Awards<\/span> and <\/span>Golden Globes<\/span> for her performance in the film, which also received nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score. Both the <\/span>National Board of Review<\/span> and the <\/span>American Film Institute<\/span> included Beale Street<\/em> in their Top 10 films of 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tickets for all BUFS shows are available at the Film House in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre (PAC) on the evening of screenings. General admission is $9.50 or $7 for members, plus tax. Memberships are available through the<\/span> Film House website<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
