{"id":56835,"date":"2019-03-18T09:51:56","date_gmt":"2019-03-18T13:51:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=56835"},"modified":"2019-03-18T16:16:34","modified_gmt":"2019-03-18T20:16:34","slug":"power-of-love-endures-in-if-beale-street-could-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/03\/power-of-love-endures-in-if-beale-street-could-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"Power of love endures in If Beale Street Could Talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock University Film Society\u2019s (BUFS) latest screening, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Beale Street Could Talk<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is a moving celebration of love and the African-American family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movie will hit the big screen at the Film House in downtown St. Catharines on Thursday, March 21.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the novel by James Baldwin, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Beale Street Could Talk<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was written and directed by Barry Jenkins (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moonlight<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and stars KiKi Layne and Canadian-born Stephan James (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Race, Selma<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film follows Tish (Layne), a newly engaged Harlem woman, who races against the clock to prove her fianc\u00e9\u2019s (James) innocence before the birth of their first child. <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beale Street<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a celebration of love told through the story of a young couple and their families as they try to bring about justice through love, for love and the promise of the American dream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat Jenkins gets most right \u2014\u00a0what astonishes me the most about this film \u2014 is Baldwin\u2019s vast affection for the broad varieties of black life,\u201d says <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vanity Fair<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>.<\/em> \u201cIt\u2019s one of the signature lessons of Baldwin\u2019s work that blackness contains multitudes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regina King (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Crime, Jerry Maguire<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) was named Best Supporting Actress at the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Academy Awards<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden Globes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for her performance in the film, which also received nominations for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score. Both the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Board of Review<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Film Institute<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> included <em>Beale Street<\/em> in their Top 10 films of 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tickets for all BUFS shows are available at the Film House in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre (PAC) on the evening of screenings. General admission is $9.50 or $7 for members, plus tax.
