{"id":56821,"date":"2019-03-15T12:32:35","date_gmt":"2019-03-15T16:32:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=56821"},"modified":"2019-03-15T17:34:51","modified_gmt":"2019-03-15T21:34:51","slug":"canadian-poet-to-reflect-on-human-impact-on-environment-during-public-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/03\/canadian-poet-to-reflect-on-human-impact-on-environment-during-public-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian poet\u00a0to reflect on human impact on environment during public talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During an upcoming talk, regarded Canadian poet and Brock Associate Professor Adam Dickinson will use poetry to share with audiences the dramatic impact humans have made on Earth\u2019s climate, geology and biological makeup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presented by the Centre for Studies in Arts and Culture (STAC), Dickinson\u2019s talk will be the next presentation in the Walker Cultural Leaders Series. It will take place on Monday, March 18, from 8 to 9 p.m. in room 211 of the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts (MIWSFPA).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWriting in the Anthropocene: Poetics and the Environment\u201d will focus on the intersections between poetry and science as a way of exploring new ecocritical perspectives and alternative modes of poetic composition. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catherine Parayre, Director of STAC, said Dickinson is a fitting artist to welcome to the Walker Cultural Leaders Series this year because of his involvement with the Centre\u2019s new Small Walker Press.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Officially launching this spring, the press publishes books by artists and authors working together on a given theme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Small Walker Press is publishing works on the theme of environmental degradation this year, and Adam Dickinson\u2019s work perfectly aligns with it,\u201d explained Parayre. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was inspired to write his contribution to the press after a walk he took with artist Lor\u00e8ne Bourgeois at Glenridge Quarry in the Fall of 2018.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dickinson is an award-winning poet whose work <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has been featured at prominent international literary festivals such as Poetry International in Rotterdam, the Harbourfront International Festival of Authors in Toronto and the Oslo International Poetry Festival in Norway.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is perhaps best known for his work <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Polymers <\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2013), which was a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shortlisted finalist for the Governor General&#8217;s Award for English-language poetry in 2013, the 2014 ReLit Award for Poetry and the 2014 Trillium Book Award. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is also the author of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cartography and Walking<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2002), <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kingdom, Phylum<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2006) and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anatomic<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2018). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His poem <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My Fear of Being Eaten<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will appear alongside art by Lor\u00e8ne Bourgeois in the forthcoming <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quarry<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to be published by the Small Walker Press later this year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His upcoming author\u2019s talk is free and open to the public.
