{"id":56797,"date":"2019-03-15T15:34:10","date_gmt":"2019-03-15T19:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=56797"},"modified":"2019-03-19T09:07:48","modified_gmt":"2019-03-19T13:07:48","slug":"brock-curling-teams-compete-on-national-stage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/03\/brock-curling-teams-compete-on-national-stage\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock curling teams compete on national stage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock University is the only Ontario school with both a men\u2019s and women\u2019s team hitting the ice at the national curling championships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the second consecutive season both Badger squads are competing in the U SPORTS championships, which began Friday, March 15 and run until Tuesday, March 19 at Willie O\u2019Ree Place in Fredericton, N.B.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head coach Murray Etherington said he\u2019s done everything he can to properly prepare them for five days of competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI always have anxious and nervous feelings before any competition, especially before nationals,\u201d said Etherington. \u201cIt\u2019s the little things that separate the top teams from the rest. Everyone is technically sound, but the top teams pick up on the speed and curl of the ice and trust what they see. The top teams seem to take advantage of the other team\u2019s misses.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The women\u2019s team, which won a bronze medal at last season\u2019s nationals, is skipped by Terri Weeks, a senior Kinesiology student from McDougall, Ont.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both teams are coming off strong performances at the OUA championships where the men\u2019s team earned a silver medal versus Carleton while the women\u2019s team defeated Lakehead 7-3 to win bronze.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The women\u2019s team consists of Weeks, vice Claire Randell, second Marcia Richardson, lead Jillian Page, fifth Laura Henderson and alternates Sarah Bailey and Cassie Barnard. The women\u2019s assistant coach is Karen Heywood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur focus leading up to U SPORTS was on gaining experience and playing different positions, team communication and taking advantage of opportunities,\u201d said Heywood. \u201cThese are talented players that execute really well.
