{"id":56793,"date":"2019-03-15T13:59:41","date_gmt":"2019-03-15T17:59:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=56793"},"modified":"2019-03-16T13:31:59","modified_gmt":"2019-03-16T17:31:59","slug":"animal-rights-at-centre-of-upcoming-brock-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/03\/animal-rights-at-centre-of-upcoming-brock-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"Animal rights at centre of upcoming Brock talk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two renowned scholars will be on campus next week to get the Brock and wider Niagara community thinking \u2014 and talking \u2014 about animals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acclaimed neuroscientist Lori Marino and Canadian academic Amy Fitzgerald will speak about marine mammal captivity, and animal advocacy and environmentalism, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_56794\" style=\"width: 313px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56794\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-56794\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/AmyFitzgerald.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"303\" height=\"317\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-56794\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Canadian scholar Amy Fitzgerald will speak at Brock on Thursday, March 21.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Presented by Brock\u2019s Department of Sociology, the free Thinking About Animals event takes place Thursday, March 21 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Pond Inlet. Everyone is welcome to attend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fitzgerald, who has published extensively in the fields of critical animal studies, green criminology, environmental sociology and gender studies, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will discuss her most recent book, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Animal Advocacy and Environmentalism<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The book explores \u201chow animal rights advocates and environmentalists can find common ground,\u201d said <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock Sociology Professor John Sorenson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fitzgerald is an associate professor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology at the University of Windsor, with a cross-appointment to the Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research. Her research focuses on the intersection of harms (criminal and otherwise) perpetrated against people, non-human animals and the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Fitzgerald also collaborates with Kendra Coulter, Chair of Brock&#8217;s Department of Labour Studies\u200e, on research about animal cruelty investigations.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expert in animal behaviour and intelligence, Marino was a senior lecturer at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> She advocates for recognition of personhood for nonhuman animals and has campaigned against keeping marine mammals in captivity for entertainment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her talk on Thursday is called &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crafting the Endgame for Dolphin and Whale Captivity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sorenson called Marino\u2019s work \u201cparticularly resonant\u201d for the Niagara region, given the proximity of the widely criticized Marineland park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat I find most impressive about Dr. Marino is her ethical position on animal research and her insistence that advocacy is a responsibility for scientists,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marino is the founder and president of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/whalesanctuaryproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Whale Sanctuary Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and executive director of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kimmela.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kimmela Center for Animal Advocacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She has published more than 130 peer-reviewed scientific papers, book chapters and magazine articles on brain evolution, intelligence and self-awareness in other animals, human-nonhuman animal relationships and captivity issues.
