{"id":56696,"date":"2019-03-12T14:04:41","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T18:04:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=56696"},"modified":"2019-03-13T13:35:12","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T17:35:12","slug":"olympic-potential-measured-at-brock-during-rbc-training-ground","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/03\/olympic-potential-measured-at-brock-during-rbc-training-ground\/","title":{"rendered":"Olympic potential measured at Brock during RBC Training Ground"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t have to be good with numbers to know pulling 290 kilograms is no easy feat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But during last weekend\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/03\/olympic-talent-wanted-as-brock-hosts-rbc-training-ground-saturday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RBC Training Ground at Brock<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, math whiz Jacob Martens was up for the challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 20-year-old Brock Badgers rower pulled more weight than any of the more than 100 athletes at the Olympic combine identifier, topping the isometric mid-thigh pull test meant to measure maximal strength.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martens, a second-year Math and Statistics student from St. Catharines, also finished in the Top 5 in three other speed and agility tests.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_56698\" style=\"width: 379px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56698\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-56698\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/RBC-Training-Ground-2-RS-1050x726.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"369\" height=\"255\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-56698\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock rower Jacob Martens was interviewed following his performance at RBC Training Ground held at Brock on March 9.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Training Ground aims to provide up-and-coming athletes a chance to compete in Canada\u2019s Olympic talent pool. This was Brock\u2019s second year hosting the event, which has been well attended by the University\u2019s varsity athletes and those from across Niagara.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martens, a self-proclaimed \u2018math nerd,\u2019 stood out from the pack during the March 9 combine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to time spent on the water and hitting the books, his schedule is filled with managing Brock\u2019s Rubik\u2019s Cube club, playing on two intramural teams (co-ed volleyball and table tennis) and working part time at a floral shop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Martens helped the Badgers\u2019 lightweight men\u2019s eight boat win a gold medal at the OUA Championships. He also won two bronze medals at nationals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Training Ground was yet another challenge he hoped to tackle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI love fitness testing: the challenge, the drive, seeing what I\u2019m capable of doing and seeing my progress along the way,\u201d Martens said. \u201cI always try to be my best in every test and with hard work, I constantly improve. I think with my results I should move on to the next round as I did last year too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even in high school, the seasoned athlete was no stranger to fitness testing, which was included as part of gym class. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSince I was a rower and trained hard, I was always able to get 100 per cent in my testings, but RBC Training Ground is the next level and tests for Olympic potential,\u201d he said of his motivation to push his limits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event measures athletes for anthropometric suitability, and then they\u2019re asked to perform speed, power, strength and endurance benchmark tests in front of officials from the Canadian Olympic Committee and 11 national sport organizations in hopes of being discovered and directed toward an Olympic sport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A total of 30 athletes identified in the Training Ground events across the country will be named RBC Future Olympians and receive funding to chase their dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe RBC Training Ground event at Brock University on Saturday was extremely successful,\u201d said Stephanie Jameson, Canadian Sport Institute Ontario\u2019s (CSIO) Manager of Performance Services, who was at the event assessing talent. \u201cThe enthusiasm and professionalism displayed by the staff and students from Brock Sports Performance was second to none, and it truly made the day special for all of the athletes in attendance.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was the first time Kurt Innes, the nationwide technical lead for RBC Training Ground, was in St. Catharines for the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was particularly impressed by the team of student volunteers from Brock.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is clearly a well-oiled machine,\u201d Innes said. \u201cAll in all, the day was a great success and we definitely could not have done it without the support from Brock University.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RBC Training Ground also had Olympians Mark Oldershaw (sprint canoe), Becky Duke (women\u2019s hockey) and Paralympian Tyler McGregor (sledge hockey) on hand to coach athletes along during their testing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe love hosting this event,\u201d said Steve Lidstone, Associate Director of Performance, Brock Sports. \u201cIt\u2019s a bonus for Brock Sports Performance to provide our Kinesiology undergraduate and graduate students with the experiential learning opportunities to run a performance combine for more than 100 athletes looking to get noticed in sports that promote talent identification and talent transfer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 15-year-old rugby player, Eden Kilgour, was the top female in three events: vertical jump, 10-metre sprint and 30-metre sprint.
