The ultimate odd couple, Laurel and Hardy charmed audiences around the world \u2014 until fame and fortune faded.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Thursday, March 14,<\/span> the Brock University Film Society (BUFS) presents<\/span> Stan & Ollie<\/span><\/em>, the funny and touching true story of Hollywood\u2019s greatest comedy duo in the twilight of their careers.<\/span><\/p>\n

This bittersweet homage to the legends features Steve Coogan (<\/span>The Trip<\/span><\/em>) as Stan Laurel and John C. Reilly (<\/span>The Sisters Brothers<\/span><\/em>) as Oliver Hardy, with a script by Jeff Pope (Coogan\u2019s co-writer on <\/span>Philomena<\/span><\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n

In the waning years of an illustrious career, and facing an uncertain future, Laurel and Hardy embark on a gruelling tour of post-war Britain. The act is a hit with their adoring fans, but the partnership is threatened by the spectre of their past and Hardy\u2019s failing health. Aware they may be approaching their swan song, the two try to rediscover just how much they mean to each other.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs a winsome glance back, and as a piece of artistic preservation, <\/span>Stan & Ollie<\/span><\/em> would be enjoyable enough. But it becomes truly transcendent in the hands of John C. Reilly and Steve Coogan,\u201d says the <\/span>Washington Post<\/span><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery character is wonderfully realized, every performance is spectacular,\u201d says <\/span>IGN<\/span><\/em>. \u201cYou\u2019ll laugh all the way through, you\u2019ll cry by the end, and you\u2019ll see the brilliance of Laurel and Hardy come back to life via the very same cinematic magic that made them legends in the first place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The stars\u2019 combative wives are masterfully played by Shirley Henderson (<\/span>Harry Potter<\/span><\/em>) and Nina Arianda (<\/span>Florence Foster Jenkins<\/span><\/em>), providing what one promoter in the film calls \u201ctwo double acts for the price of one.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Tickets for all BUFS shows are available at the Film House in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre (PAC) on the evening of screenings. General admission is $9.50 or $7 for members, plus tax. Memberships are available through the<\/span> Film House website<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
