{"id":56496,"date":"2019-03-04T10:00:19","date_gmt":"2019-03-04T15:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=56496"},"modified":"2019-03-04T10:04:02","modified_gmt":"2019-03-04T15:04:02","slug":"oscar-nominated-cold-war-next-in-bufs-lineup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/03\/oscar-nominated-cold-war-next-in-bufs-lineup\/","title":{"rendered":"Oscar-nominated Cold War next in BUFS lineup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story of two mismatched but fated lovers caught between East and West in 1950s Europe will grace the big screen in the latest offering of the Brock University Film Society (BUFS).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold War<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a passionate romance from writer-director Pawel Pawlikowski (<\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ida, Last Resort<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), will be shown Thursday, March 7 at the Film House in downtown St. Catharines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the ruins of Poland following the Second World War, a pianist is commissioned by the Soviet state to form a musical ensemble to help rekindle national pride. While touring the villages in search of talent, he meets and falls in love with a beautiful, fiery and charismatic singer. A performance in Berlin offers the pair an opportunity for escape to the West but a last-minute decision finds them stranded on either side of the Iron Curtain. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe crystalline black-and-white cinematography exalts its moments of intimate grimness and its dreamlike showpieces of theatrical display,\u201d says <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt is an elliptical, episodic story of imprisonment and escape, epic in scope.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is more succinct, calling <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold War<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201ca terrific, smoky-cool love story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A critical and audience favourite at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, where Pawlikowski was named Best Director, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold War<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was also nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Director, Best Foreign Language Film and Best Cinematography.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tickets for all BUFS shows are available at the Film House in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre (PAC) on the evening of screenings. General admission is $9.50 or $7 for members, plus tax.
