{"id":56266,"date":"2019-02-20T16:02:52","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T21:02:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=56266"},"modified":"2019-02-21T08:53:49","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T13:53:49","slug":"redress-event-highlights-pain-resilience-of-indigenous-women-and-girls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/02\/redress-event-highlights-pain-resilience-of-indigenous-women-and-girls\/","title":{"rendered":"REDress event highlights pain, resilience of Indigenous women and girls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Ojibway, Mashkawizii means \u201cshe has inner strength.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That strength was harnessed during a powerful event held at Brock University last week to draw attention to the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The REDress Project\u2019s second annual initiative saw flowing red gowns hung outside around Brock University\u2019s main campus and Rodman Hall Art Centre, as well as inside at the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts in downtown St. Catharines.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_56261\" style=\"width: 477px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56261\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-56261\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/DrumGroup-RS-1050x708.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"467\" height=\"315\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-56261\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Members of the women\u2019s drum group from the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre accompanied the speakers at the REDress event.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each dress was meant to represent the spirit of a missing or murdered Indigenous female.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Feb. 14 event culminated in presentations in Thistle Complex by local Indigenous women who shared messages of pain, resilience and hope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following a smudging ceremony, Robyn Bourgeois, an Indigenous scholar and Assistant Professor in the Centre for Women\u2019s and Gender Studies, welcomed guests and introduced speakers Eileen and Sheena Joseph, Lyn Trudeau and Leona Skye \u2014 all \u201cpeople who have felt this trauma personally,\u201d Bourgeois said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eileen Joseph shared the story of her daughter, Shelly, who was murdered. The tragedy left Eileen to raise her then infant granddaughter, Sheena.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Years later, Eileen and Sheena have, with quiet determination, learned to support one another as well as fellow survivors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Addressing the crowd through tears at the event, Sheena, now a mother herself, offered love to those in attendance who themselves were suffering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI have enough to share,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock PhD student and instructor Lyn Trudeau presented her response to a recent stage production of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pig Girl<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the Robert Pickton murders, a play she called \u201cobscene\u201d and \u201cdisrespectful.\u201d Originally written and produced by a non-Indigenous team, it has since been re-imagined and presented by Indigenous players.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A self-described advocate and survivor of human trafficking, artist Leona Skye was once numbered among Canada\u2019s missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her name was removed from the list only two years ago when \u201cthey realized I\u2019d been found,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She spoke not only about the abuse she suffered since she was a young child, but also of the compassion she eventually felt for her \u201cfirst pimp,\u201d her father who had himself been abused in the residential school system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her talk, Trudeau quoted a Cheyenne proverb: \u201cA nation is not conquered until the hearts of its women are on the ground. Then it is finished; no matter how brave its warriors or how strong their weapons.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year\u2019s REDress event called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hearts of our Nations<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was a testament to the strength and resilience of Indigenous women in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re still here,\u201d said Bourgeois. \u201cThis is the largest gathering of Indigenous women on campus.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event was punctuated by song from the women\u2019s drum group from the Fort Erie Native Friendship Centre. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theredressproject.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REDress project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, founded by M\u00e9tis artist Jamie Black, aims to focus attention on the issue of gender- and race-based violence in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Support for this year\u2019s event was provided by the Student Justice Centre, Centre for Women\u2019s and Gender Studies, Women\u2019s Campus Safety Fund\/Human Rights and Equity Office, Sexual Violence Prevention Committee, Department of English Language and Literature, Tecumseh Centre for Aboriginal Research and Education, Ontario Public Interest Research Group (OPIRG) Brock, Master in Social Justice and Equity Studies program, Ontario Secondary School Teacher\u2019s Federation at Brock, Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts and Rodman Hall Art Centre.
