{"id":56057,"date":"2019-02-05T12:23:55","date_gmt":"2019-02-05T17:23:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=56057"},"modified":"2019-02-05T16:26:59","modified_gmt":"2019-02-05T21:26:59","slug":"brock-profs-research-transformed-into-a-musical-production","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/02\/brock-profs-research-transformed-into-a-musical-production\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock prof\u2019s research transformed into a musical production"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every parent of an active child has spent hours waiting on the sidelines of a team practice or in the wings at a rehearsal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some, it\u2019s a time to catch up on reading and correspondence \u2014 or just a rare opportunity to tune out. But for Dawn Zinga, Professor of Child and Youth Studies and Acting Associate Dean of Social Sciences, Graduate Studies and Research, that time spawned a new research project.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_56059\" style=\"width: 413px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56059\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-56059\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/ZingaReynolds.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"403\" height=\"264\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-56059\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dawn Zinga, Professor of Child and Youth Studies and Acting Associate Dean of Social Sciences, Graduate Studies and Research, with veteran Hamilton Theatre Incorporated director Sharon Reynolds.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the parent of two daughters involved in community theatre and dance, Zinga has spent her fair share of time at rehearsals. Instead of just waiting passively for her kids, Zinga drew inspiration to develop a research project and create a new theatre production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The research idea took hold in 2016 as she watched her youngest daughter, Sarah, perform in a Hamilton Theatre Incorporated (HTI) production of <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Showstoppers<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs is true of most community theatres, volunteers are the heart and soul of the organization,\u201d says Zinga. \u201cI ended up volunteering as a \u2018child wrangler,\u2019 which seemed a fitting application of my child and youth experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI started thinking about how children and youth have been conceptualized in Broadway musicals over the ages,\u201d she says. \u201cI wondered if we could develop a production that explored that idea.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other than her work as a volunteer, Zinga had no prior theatre experience, so part of her research included how to stage a production.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Zinga\u2019s child-wrangling skills were called on again the following year when Sarah was cast in another HTI production. No longer a complete novice, Zinga now felt she could approach the show\u2019s creator and director, Sharon Reynolds, to pitch her idea for a new production. Reynolds was intrigued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two began researching Broadway musicals. They selected songs that reflected \u201cthe conceptualization of children and youth, parent-child relationships, families and growing up,\u201d says Zinga.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout their time collaborating, Reynolds continued to be involved in other productions for HTI, including <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High School Musical<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which featured another of Zinga\u2019s daughters, 18-year-old Victoria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, 31 musical numbers were selected to become part of what is now known as <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broadway Dreamers<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. HTI agreed to add the show to its 2018-19 season and planning began in earnest to stage the production. Auditions took place in October 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broadway Dreamers<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is truly a family affair. Zinga\u2019s daughters Victoria and Sarah are among the cast of 19 children and youth, along with four adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIronically, the cast includes four families with multiple participating family members. Three of the adults have at least one child also in the cast,\u201d says Zinga.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis adds an additional dynamic to a production that includes a focus on parent-child relationships.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until now, Zinga\u2019s research focused on students\u2019 experiences within educational settings, Indigenous education and pedagogies, and young competitive dancers\u2019 experiences. She says her promotion to full professor gave her \u201cthe courage to try something completely different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project has been supported financially by a Brock Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada Institutional Grant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Broadway Dreamers<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is set to open on Friday, Feb. 15 and run through to March 2 at 140 McNab St. N. in Hamilton.
