{"id":56022,"date":"2019-02-04T16:09:15","date_gmt":"2019-02-04T21:09:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=56022"},"modified":"2019-02-04T16:29:30","modified_gmt":"2019-02-04T21:29:30","slug":"brock-research-explores-potential-new-tourism-niche-in-niagara-through-un-designation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/02\/brock-research-explores-potential-new-tourism-niche-in-niagara-through-un-designation\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock research explores potential new tourism niche in Niagara through UN designation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Visitors coming to Niagara have lots to see and do thanks to the region being a top tourism destination.<\/p>\n<p>New research by Brock University\u2019s Niagara Community Observatory (NCO) says there\u2019s potential to enhance Niagara\u2019s vibrant tourism industry if the region were to become a <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/new\/en\/natural-sciences\/environment\/earth-sciences\/unesco-global-geoparks\/fundamental-features\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UNESCO Global Geopark<\/a><\/u>.<\/p>\n<p>A Global Geopark is an area containing \u201csites and landscapes of international geological significance,\u201d according to UNESCO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing designated a UNESCO Global Geopark allows Niagara to brand itself internationally as a destination for geotourism,\u201d says Carol Phillips, author of the NCO\u2019s policy brief <em>Ohnia:kara, An Aspiring Global Geopark.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cNiagara has a fascinating earth history that has created so many beautiful sites, culminating in Niagara Falls,\u201d she says. \u201cThis brand allows us to showcase those sites as well as the history and culture that has developed around them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The policy brief discusses the concept of a geopark in more detail, describes the efforts of the geographic educational non-profit\u00a0<u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.geospatialniagara.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geospatial Niagara<\/a><\/u> to apply to become a geopark, offers case studies from other areas of the world and outlines \u201cnext steps\u201d in the application process.<\/p>\n<p>The NCO will launch the policy brief <em>Ohnia:kara, An Aspiring Global Geopark<\/em> Thursday, Feb. 7 at Brock University.
