{"id":55996,"date":"2019-02-01T12:10:36","date_gmt":"2019-02-01T17:10:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=55996"},"modified":"2019-02-01T16:25:36","modified_gmt":"2019-02-01T21:25:36","slug":"social-sciences-celebrates-outstanding-faculty-and-staff","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/02\/social-sciences-celebrates-outstanding-faculty-and-staff\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Sciences celebrates outstanding faculty and staff"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How people engage with their families, communities, governments and environments, as well as each other, helped inspire the exciting and diverse research recognized at the annual Celebration of Excellence in the Social Sciences. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Held at Pond Inlet on Jan. 29, the event was an opportunity to recognize achievements on both sides of the education spectrum, celebrating both teachers and learners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAlthough the Celebration of Excellence is focused on individual accomplishments, I want to acknowledge the collective effort that goes into supporting each of those individuals,\u201d Ingrid Makus, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences (FOSS), told the crowd of students, staff, faculty members and supporters who gathered for the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_56000\" style=\"width: 307px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-56000\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-56000\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/PrusaczykHodson-1050x953.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"269\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-56000\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Master\u2019s student in Psychology Elvira Prusaczyk (left) won a Graduate Student Writing Award for best MA thesis titled \u201cWomen\u2019s Internalization and Rejection of Sexist Humour.\u201d She is pictured with supervisor Psychology Professor Gordon Hodson.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She thanked the many staff and faculty within FOSS, members of Brock\u2019s service departments and the University\u2019s senior administration for their support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Makus was delighted to recognize the outstanding student research and writing happening within the Faculty and to formally announce two faculty honours.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Rebecca Raby from the Department of Child and Youth Studies was presented with the Distinguished Researcher award. Raby serves as the Director of Brock\u2019s Social Justice Research Institute (SJRI) and is affiliated with master\u2019s programs in Social Justice and Equity Studies and Sociology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It is an honour to receive this award,&#8221; Raby said. \u201cIt reflects the shared creativity, commitment and hard work of incredible faculty and student collaborators that I have been able to work with, as well as excellent mentorship, most notably from Jane Helleiner in Sociology and from all of the past and present members of the SJRI\u2019s Faculty Steering Committee.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicole Goodman, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science, received the Untenured Researcher of the Year award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Goodman was humbled by the honour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI&#8217;m very grateful for the opportunities and support provided to me by the Department of Political Science and the Faculty of Social Sciences at Brock, which has allowed my research to have a bigger impact in the communities it serves.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two faculty awards were created to recognize FOSS members with consistent records of outstanding research achievements as reflected in the quality and quantity of refereed publications, grants awards and other research activities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Distinguished Researcher award for tenured faculty considers accomplishments from the last five academic years. The Untenured Researcher of the Year award considers accomplishments within the previous academic year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associate Dean Graduate and Research Dawn Zinga presented certificates to graduate students in the Faculty who exhibited exceptional research or writing skills in the past year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alexandra Perna, a master\u2019s student in Geography, was among the recipients of a Graduate Student Research Excellence award.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perna said the faculty and staff in Geography and Tourism were a big factor in her success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs much as it\u2019s my award, this is really a reflection of my whole department,\u201d she said. She credited her \u201camazing\u201d supervisor, Associate Professor Ebru Ustundag, with \u201cmaking me feel that I can accomplish anything.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perna is now thinking of pursuing a PhD, something she said she wouldn\u2019t have considered without Ustundag\u2019s encouragement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Perna, the most significant benefit of the award may be the feedback from the adjudication committee.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGetting feedback was so awesome,\u201d she said. \u201cIt shows their dedication in reading all these proposals. They aren\u2019t just skimming through them. They\u2019re actually helping the students learn in a different way and become better.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lisa Michelle Whittingham, who calls herself a community-based researcher, also received a Research Excellence award. The master\u2019s student in Child and Youth Studies was grateful to have her work validated by the Faculty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI feel this shows they have faith that my research can make positive impact on the community,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the event\u2019s closing remarks, Tim Kenyon, Vice-President Research, marvelled at the breadth and depth of the research represented in FOSS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat particularly impresses me is that your research and scholarship address a range of challenges we face as individuals, a society and a global community,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would like to congratulate those who were recognized today and extend my appreciation to all faculty, students and staff for creating such a dynamic community that makes a difference.<\/span><b>\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Celebration of Excellence program listing all award recipients is posted on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/social-sciences\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/27\/CoE_Program_FINALweb.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faculty of Social Sciences website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> along with a PDF of the Powerpoint presentation that accompanied the event.
