{"id":55713,"date":"2019-01-28T12:01:28","date_gmt":"2019-01-28T17:01:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=55713"},"modified":"2019-01-28T16:17:47","modified_gmt":"2019-01-28T21:17:47","slug":"rodman-hall-readying-for-two-exhibition-openings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/01\/rodman-hall-readying-for-two-exhibition-openings\/","title":{"rendered":"Rodman Hall readying for two exhibition openings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two powerful exhibitions featuring the work of clients from Start Me Up Niagara (SMUN) and Brock alumna Natalie Hunter, respectively, will open at Rodman Hall Art Centre Thursday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first of two new Rodman Hall offerings, the Art Me Up Niagara group show is a play on the name of the organization that works with individuals facing significant life challenges, such as poverty, addiction, homelessness, mental illness and unemployment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SMUN participants have created artwork in response to Rodman Hall\u2019s current <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/10\/indoor-rooftop-exhibit-to-open-at-rodman-hall\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Northern Oracle installation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which aims to inspire people to share their message, whatever it might be, with the world and have their voice heard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn developing the public programs activating this installation, I was guided by inquiry into why this work might be important to the Niagara community, and homelessness immediately arose as a critical issue,\u201d says Elizabeth Chitty, Interim Grants and Programming Officer at Rodman Hall. \u201cWe will all benefit from seeing and listening to the artistic voices of those with lived experiences of homelessness in St. Catharines.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second exhibition, Hunter\u2019s \u201cStaring into the Sun,\u201d features photo-based sculptures and installations that explore the relationship between memory and physical space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter (BA \u201911) uses vibrant colour filters and multiple photographic exposures in her creation process. The works are printed on translucent films that hang, ripple and drape to interact with architectural features of the exhibition space.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each viewer\u2019s experience of the pieces, which allude to enduring routines and the passage of time, shifts with subtle changes in light.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunter will give a public talk about her work on Thursday, March 28 at 7 p.m. at Rodman Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the launch of the Art Me Up Niagara showcase, another event will be held this week related to the Northern Oracle exhibition.
