{"id":55650,"date":"2019-01-25T12:48:11","date_gmt":"2019-01-25T17:48:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=55650"},"modified":"2019-02-25T09:27:44","modified_gmt":"2019-02-25T14:27:44","slug":"timely-topics-on-tap-for-political-science-speaker-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/01\/timely-topics-on-tap-for-political-science-speaker-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Timely topics on tap for Political Science speaker series"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The politics of genetic modification, Canadian drug assessments and how Beijing\u2019s weaknesses impact China are among the timely and controversial topics set to be discussed as part of an ongoing speaker series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hosted by Brock\u2019s Department of Political Science, the series resumes for the new year on Tuesday, Jan. 29 with a presentation by Kalina Kamenova, founder and Research Director of the Canadian Institute for Genomics and Society. Kamenova will speak about efforts underway to deploy genetically modified mosquitoes to eradicate malaria in Africa, as well as the opposing push for a global moratorium on gene drive research and its applications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She will examine the dynamics of group politics in this scientific controversy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The series continues on Monday, Feb. 11 with a talk focused on public drug plans in Canada. Katherine Boothe, Associate Professor of Political Science at McMaster University, will look at the recent inclusion of patients and members of the public on advisory committees responsible for reviewing clinical and economic evidence about new drugs, and making recommendations about reimbursement. She will explore how these changes are viewed by the committees\u2019 technical experts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The series wraps up on March 4 with a talk from author, TV commentator, speaker and internationally renowned expert Gordon Chang.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cChang, author of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Coming Collapse of China<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, believes that China, more than any other country, will drive events in the coming decades,\u201d explains Charles Burton, Associate Professor in Brock\u2019s Department of Political Science, who is also an expert on China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Chang, Chinese ruler Xi Jinping\u2019s \u201cbreathtaking ambition\u201d has been raising eyebrows around the globe. He cautions that China\u2019s domination of our era could spell big trouble.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burton feels it is particularly exciting for Brock to welcome \u201cone of America&#8217;s most well-known China analysts\u201d at this important time when \u201cCanada is in Beijing\u2019s crosshairs.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMany say no one better understands Beijing\u2019s internal weaknesses than Chang,\u201d says Burton. \u201cAnd no one has talked more than he has about how these weaknesses are driving China\u2019s dangerous behaviours.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Department of Political Science Speaker Series runs monthly throughout the academic year.
