{"id":55638,"date":"2019-01-24T15:48:32","date_gmt":"2019-01-24T20:48:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=55638"},"modified":"2019-01-24T15:49:15","modified_gmt":"2019-01-24T20:49:15","slug":"shoot-for-the-cure-game-hits-close-to-home-for-brock-player","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/01\/shoot-for-the-cure-game-hits-close-to-home-for-brock-player\/","title":{"rendered":"Shoot for the Cure game hits close to home for Brock player"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Courtney McPherson can\u2019t help but think of her mother when she sees one of the trademark pink ribbons.<\/p>\n<p>Now the starting centre for the Brock Badgers women\u2019s basketball team, it was during McPherson\u2019s high school years when her mother Kathy started treatment for breast cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe found a lump,\u201d McPherson, a Brock Recreation and Leisure Studies student, recalled. \u201cLuckily, she reacted quickly and got a mammogram, followed by a biopsy.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55640\" style=\"width: 434px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55640\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-55640\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/ShootForTheCure1-RS-1050x729.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"424\" height=\"294\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-55640\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock University will host its Shoot for the Cure game on Friday, Jan. 25 in the Bob Davis Gymnasium.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Kathy\u2019s first chemotherapy treatment came when McPherson\u2019s high school girls basketball team, the Confederation Jaguars, were making their first run to the provincial championships in Cornwall.<\/p>\n<p>It was followed by many more hours of driving from the family home in Welland to Hamilton\u2019s Juravinski Cancer Centre.<\/p>\n<p>With that experience in her memory, McPherson says she\u2019s proud to be part of Brock University\u2019s Shoot for the Cure fundraiser game the women\u2019s basketball team is hosting Friday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. in Brock&#8217;s Bob Davis Gymnasium.<\/p>\n<p>The national Shoot for the Cure campaign has proven to be an overwhelming success since it was launched in 2007 with more than $1.25 million in donations to the Canadian Cancer Society\u2019s breast cancer initiatives. The campaign includes all 47 U SPORTS women\u2019s basketball teams.<\/p>\n<p>Successfully fighting cancer wasn\u2019t easy for McPherson\u2019s mother or anyone in the family, but they got through it together. As usual, Kathy will be in the stands cheering for her daughter Friday night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom loves basketball. I remember seeing her in the stands every single game even though she just started chemo. We won the championship, and I believe it was because we had her cheering us on for every game,\u201d said McPherson, who played for the University of Ottawa and Niagara College before coming to Brock.<\/p>\n<p>An estimated 26,300 Canadian women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017, according to the Canadian Cancer Society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCancer awareness is important to all members of society. It\u2019s one of the worst diseases afflicting our country,\u201d said Brock women\u2019s head coach Mike Rao. \u201cAnything we could do to stop the spread of cancer, we should do.
