{"id":55564,"date":"2019-01-21T15:56:33","date_gmt":"2019-01-21T20:56:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=55564"},"modified":"2019-01-23T11:11:54","modified_gmt":"2019-01-23T16:11:54","slug":"public-brock-lecture-on-jewish-history-to-mark-holocaust-remembrance-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/01\/public-brock-lecture-on-jewish-history-to-mark-holocaust-remembrance-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Public Brock lecture on Jewish history to mark Holocaust Remembrance Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A free public event designed to educate people about the Holocaust and the larger context of the Jewish community is planned for Sunday, Jan. 27.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lecture will be held at the Niagara Falls Military Museum in observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">History Professor Jack Lightstone, past-President and Vice-Chancellor of Brock University, will deliver a public keynote lecture titled \u201cThe making of &#8216;the other&#8217; and its social and political consequences: Lessons from the historical experience of the Jewish people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Holocaust was not simply the \u2018final solution\u2019 to the \u2018Jewish question\u2019 stemming from the minds of Nazis, but the result of 1,700 years of virulent anti-Judaic rhetoric, primarily from Christian leadership, beginning in the second century,\u201d says Lightstone. \u201cIts initial purpose was to keep early Christians from being absorbed into the Jewish\/Judaic community in the Roman world. These cast the Jews as the ultimate \u2018other.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increased secularization and the rise of modern nationalism led to this anti-Jewish rhetoric and policy being translated into nationalist rhetoric and giving rise to anti-Semitism in Europe, where it was exploited by Russia and Germany for political ends.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is a lesson to be learned from all this,\u201d says Lightstone. \u201cNot just about Jews, but about \u2018otherizing\u2019 others for any limited purpose.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The upcoming event\u2019s aim to educate people about the Jewish community is particularly important during the current resurgence of virulent anti-Semitism, says Elizabeth Vlossak, Associate Professor of History and co-founder of The History Lab.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe event is about remembering the victims, the impact on survivors and what drives a society to do this,\u201d says Vlossak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnti-Semitism is alive and well throughout Europe as well as Canada and the U.S. \u2014 and it is virulent and violent,\u201d she adds, referencing the murder of Jews in a Pittsburg synagogue, the recent vandalism of the Sofia Synagogue in Bulgaria, and a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/acts-of-faith\/wp\/2018\/04\/12\/two-thirds-of-millennials-dont-know-what-auschwitz-is-according-to-study-of-fading-holocaust-knowledge\/?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.d599f8b130bd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showing that two-thirds of American millennials could not identify what Auschwitz is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holocaust Remembrance Day has been recognized as an international day of commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust by the United Nations since 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event is a collaboration between the History Lab, Seedling for Change in Society and Environment (SCS&amp;E), and the Niagara Falls Military Museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vlossak and Suescun Pozas are Founding Fellow Associates and research fellows of the History Lab and Associate Professors in the Department of History. The History Lab is a partnership between the Niagara Military Museum and SCS&amp;E.
