{"id":55552,"date":"2019-01-21T13:00:37","date_gmt":"2019-01-21T18:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=55552"},"modified":"2019-01-21T13:00:37","modified_gmt":"2019-01-21T18:00:37","slug":"ccovi-offers-taste-of-niagara-wine-industry-to-new-york-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/01\/ccovi-offers-taste-of-niagara-wine-industry-to-new-york-students\/","title":{"rendered":"CCOVI offers taste of Niagara wine industry to New York students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to the grape and wine industry, even a little bit of distance can make a world of difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oenology and Viticulture students from Finger Lakes Community College in New York State recently made the trip to Brock University to spend two days learning about and comparing the local industry to the sector they study just a few hours away.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55555\" style=\"width: 398px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55555\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-55555\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Finger-Lakes4-RS-1050x788.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"388\" height=\"291\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-55555\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marc Pistor, winemaker and course instructor at CCOVI, and Paul Brock, winemaker and Associate Professor at Finger Lakes Community College, lead students on a wine tasting.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is an information exchange, an opportunity for students from Finger Lakes to understand a little bit more about what we do and our wine industry here,\u201d said Marc Pistor, winemaker and course instructor at Brock\u2019s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI). \u201cThey are able to taste some of our wines and meet some of the students from our program to discuss educational experiences.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group of about 25 students spent time last week visiting wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake, including Jackson Triggs, Peller Estates, Reif Estate, Between the Lines and Caroline Cellars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor these students, it is the first time they have really seen these massive estates,\u201d said Paul Brock, Associate Professor of Viticulture and Wine Technology at Finger Lakes Community College. \u201cIt is also the first time that a lot of them have seen flat vineyards. In the Finger Lakes, they are all on slopes and it is very different topography.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students also discussed differences in wines, with back-to-back tastings of Rieslings from Cave Spring Cellars in Jordan and Silver Thread Vineyard in Lodi, N.Y., where Brock is the winemaker.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThroughout this trip, students have also noticed there are some grape varieties here that aren\u2019t necessarily done in the Finger Lakes,\u201d Brock said. \u201cWe have a little bit of Sauvignon Blanc planted but we saw quite a few of them here. We have also seen Gamay, I know that is done a lot more here in Ontario and we only have one or two plantings in the Finger Lakes, so it is not very common.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55553\" style=\"width: 370px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55553\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-55553\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Finger-Lakes1-RS-1050x788.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"270\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-55553\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students from Finger Lakes Community College visit Brock University\u2019s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute to meet with students and learn about each other\u2019s grape and wine industries.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This annual trip across the border has become an opportunity for these students and their professors to learn from each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFrom a geographic standpoint, we are so close together and we share such a similar history, but a lot is different here in terms of the emphasis on vinifera grape varieties and the emphasis on larger production,\u201d said Brock. \u00a0\u201cIt is always interesting learning how two regions that share a climate and are so close can be so different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This was Elizabeth Dudek\u2019s third time making the trip to Brock with Finger Lakes Community College.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is so beneficial. It bridges the two wine regions and we get to share ideas and learn so much,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe estates and larger properties here are so different. In the Finger Lakes wine region, it is more family-based and small.
