{"id":55532,"date":"2019-01-18T16:11:49","date_gmt":"2019-01-18T21:11:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=55532"},"modified":"2019-01-18T16:11:49","modified_gmt":"2019-01-18T21:11:49","slug":"prime-ministers-visit-to-brock-provides-unique-experience-for-student-volunteers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/01\/prime-ministers-visit-to-brock-provides-unique-experience-for-student-volunteers\/","title":{"rendered":"Prime Minister\u2019s visit to Brock provides unique experience for student volunteers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to showcasing Brock to a national audience, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau\u2019s recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/01\/gallery-full-house-for-prime-ministers-town-hall-at-brock-university\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">town hall at the University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provided invaluable opportunities for students in the Faculty of Social Sciences (FOSS).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognizing the event, made possible through the hard work of dozens of members of the Brock community, had the potential for unique experiences, Social Sciences Dean Ingrid Makus and Chair of Sociology Kate Bezanson immediately got involved and began inviting students from the Faculty to volunteer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among those chosen to participate were Jessica Falk and Samantha Powless.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55534\" style=\"width: 395px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55534\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-55534\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Samantha-Powess-and-Jessica-Falk-RS-1050x835.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"306\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-55534\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Samantha Powless (left), a Political Science graduate student, and Jessica Falk, a fourth-year student in Sociology and Women\u2019s and Gender Studies, were among the volunteers at the Prime Minister\u2019s town hall event held at Brock on Jan. 15.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Falk, a fourth-year student in Sociology and Women\u2019s and Gender Studies, spent the afternoon shadowing one of the town hall co-ordinators from the Prime Minister\u2019s (PM) Office.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause of the importance of the event, security was high,\u201d Falk said. \u201cRCMP and police officers conducted several security sweeps of the gym, surrounding areas and other areas of campus. They even brought police dogs with them to ensure the safety of the PM.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She called it \u201cincredible to see the amount of behind-the-scenes work that goes into an event like the town hall meeting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI really enjoyed this experience and was honoured to be able to spend the day with the team from the (Prime Minister\u2019s Office).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Brock event was one of five town halls held by the Prime Minister across Canada, and the only stop in Ontario. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Powless, a Political Science graduate student who volunteered her time at the event as a FOSS representative, was excited to potentially ask Trudeau a question as one of the many members of the crowd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had planned to ask about the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women inquiry and what more he will be doing to work towards reconciliation and efforts with Indigenous youth, if he is re-elected,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although she ultimately wasn\u2019t called on by the Prime Minister, and would have liked more details on Indigenous issues, she was pleased with how he interacted with members of the audience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe offered more in his answers than I expected,\u201d she said. \u201cIn my (Political Science) courses, I\u2019ve seen many politicians avoid answers with vague, broad and fluffy language, but he did address a fair number of the questions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The town hall \u201cgarnered considerable national attention and I congratulate Brock\u2019s collaborative and impressive team effort,\u201d Bezanson said following the Jan. 15 event. \u201cIt reflected the centrality of universities in sharing knowledge, engaging in dialogue, dissent and debate, and in fostering democratic participation.
