The article was co-written with Natasha Tusikov, Assistant Professor of Criminology at York University.<\/p>\n<p>Haggart and Tusikov write:<\/p>\n<p><em>When it came to our online lives, 2018 was revealing in its dysfunction.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The just-expired year\u2019s parade of scandals at Facebook alone\u00a0was relentless \u2014\u00a0Cambridge Analytica, its\u00a0inflation of video-viewing stats\u00a0that have been credited with convincing legacy media companies to \u201cpivot to video\u201d and away from print, data breaches, playing fast and loose with users\u2019 data and of course its\u00a0role in enabling Russian interference\u00a0in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The company also\u00a0stands accused by a United Nations agency\u00a0of contributing to a genocide in Myanmar by\u00a0failing to effectively police hate speech on its platform.\u00a0Others\u00a0have\u00a0noted how radio\u00a0played a similar role in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Facebook is only the most obviously awful of the social-media platforms that have become so central to our social, economic and political lives.
