{"id":55371,"date":"2019-01-11T10:33:33","date_gmt":"2019-01-11T15:33:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=55371"},"modified":"2024-09-01T09:55:53","modified_gmt":"2024-09-01T13:55:53","slug":"blythe-daigle-and-baird-the-meaning-of-environmental-words-matters-in-the-age-of-fake-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/01\/blythe-daigle-and-baird-the-meaning-of-environmental-words-matters-in-the-age-of-fake-news\/","title":{"rendered":"BLYTHE, DAIGLE AND BAIRD: The meaning of environmental words matters in the age of \u2018fake news\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jessica Blythe, Assistant Professor in Brock&#8217;s Environmental Sustainability Research Centre, Christine Daigle, Professor of Philosophy, and Julia Baird, Assistant Professor and Canada Research Chair in Human Dimensions of Water Resources and Water Resilience, co-wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/pmn\/news-pmn\/the-meaning-of-environmental-words-matters-in-the-age-of-fake-news\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">piece recently published in the National Post<\/a> about the misuse and misinterpretation of environmental words.<\/p>\n<p>Blythe, Daigle and Baird write:<\/p>\n<p><em>This week, U.S. President Donald Trump gave a live address on prime-time television where he repeatedly used the words \u201cviolent,\u201d \u201cillegal aliens\u201d and \u201ccrisis\u201d to arouse public fear. While Trump\u2019s speech was based largely on fallacies, his fear-mongering shapes the national tone and can generate real-world impacts.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Words matter because they wield power. Words shape our thinking about the world and, in turn, the actions we take. The meaning of words has never been more relevant than now \u2014 in the era of \u201cfake news\u201d \u2014 when so-called alternative facts abound.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Environmental words can also be misinterpreted or misused. In the most sinister cases, language can be put to work to promote particular agendas and silence others.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Remember \u201cbeautiful clean coal?\u201d The Trump administration used the term as the backbone for the continued development of the fossil fuel industry. At the same time, it systematically removed the words \u201cclimate change\u201d from federal websites, a measure aimed at undermining climate action.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Power can be expressed through environmental buzzwords. They are used to influence policy direction, funding and produce norms that become entrenched in their meaning around the world. Motivated by this idea, our recent research explores the meaning of three environmental buzzwords \u2014 resilience, sustainability and transformation.
