{"id":55354,"date":"2019-01-10T09:01:32","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T14:01:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=55354"},"modified":"2019-01-10T16:05:14","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T21:05:14","slug":"deadlines-nearing-for-research-communication-competitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/01\/deadlines-nearing-for-research-communication-competitions\/","title":{"rendered":"Deadlines nearing for research communication competitions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Student researchers have the chances to win cash prizes, hone their communications skills and showcase their research projects through several national competitions offered this semester.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadlines for submissions are quickly approaching, with many due this month. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the contest, eligible applicants include graduate students, undergraduate students and research professors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock University has done exceptionally well in these national competitions, winning a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/brock-student-wins-two-awards-in-national-science-photo-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jury Prize and People\u2019s Choice Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada\u2019s (NSERC)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2018 Science Exposed photo contest;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/04\/three-brock-student-videos-among-top-15-of-national-science-research-contest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking third place <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NSERC\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 Science, Action! contest;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/04\/two-brock-students-named-finalists-in-national-research-video-contest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">two teams finishing in the top 25<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the 2018 Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Storytellers contest; and winning a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/06\/brock-student-wins-peoples-choice-award-at-canadian-3mt-finals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People\u2019s Choice Award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the 2016 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) national competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Competition details<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Science Exposed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/ScienceExposed-PreuveParLimage\/index_eng.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science Exposed <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a photographic competition devoted exclusively to images of Canadian scientific research in all fields of study. Organized by NSERC, the competition is open to all individuals or groups who carry out research in the public or private sectors, including graduate students and research professors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Submission deadline: Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 11:59 p.m.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prizes: Three Jury Prizes of $2,000 and a People\u2019s Choice Award of $2,000. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Past Brock finalists: In 2018, Brock Master of Sustainability student Dana Harris (BSc \u201916) won Jury Prize and People\u2019s Choice Award for her photo<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/brock-student-wins-two-awards-in-national-science-photo-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exploring the jack pine tight knit family tree<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In 2016, a team led by Brock biologist Glenn Tattersall placed in the top 20 finalists for their photo<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2016\/06\/brock-university-team-finalists-in-national-photo-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burning Love<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Science, Action!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A second competition organized by NSERC,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/ScienceAction\/index_eng.asp\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science, Action!<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, challenges undergraduate and graduate students to create a short and creative 60-second video that will get Canadians excited about science and engineering research. Videos can be live action or animated and must feature a research project that is currently receiving NSERC funding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Submission deadline: Friday, Jan. 18 at 4:59 p.m.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prizes: Contestants are eligible to win one of 15 cash prizes worth up to $3,500. From among the 15 finalists, six entries will be selected as final winners, three in English and three in French. One special prize worth $3,000 is offered in addition to the 15 cash prizes awarded to finalists. This year\u2019s special prize theme is \u2018research in the north.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Past Brock finalists: In 2018, Brock University had<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/04\/three-brock-student-videos-among-top-15-of-national-science-research-contest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three winners in the final top 15 videos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from universities across Canada, one of which placed third nationwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Storytellers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hosted by SSHRC,<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca\/society-societe\/storytellers-jai_une_histoire_a_raconter\/index-eng.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Storytellers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contest challenges students to show Canadians how social sciences and humanities research is affecting our lives, our world and our future for the better. In a maximum of three minutes or 300 words, students communicate about a SSHRC-funded project that is either their own or their supervisors\u2019. Contestants are encouraged to push creative boundaries \u2014 the submission can be a video, podcast, infographic, text or other form of communication. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Submission deadline: Thursday, Jan. 31 at 5 p.m.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prizes: The top 25 finalists will receive a $3,000 cash prize as well as registration to the 2019 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of British Columbia to attend a special communications master class and deliver a live presentation at the Storytellers Showcase.
