{"id":55352,"date":"2019-01-10T13:15:33","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T18:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=55352"},"modified":"2019-01-10T16:06:35","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T21:06:35","slug":"brock-grad-appointed-to-order-of-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2019\/01\/brock-grad-appointed-to-order-of-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock grad appointed to Order of Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brock University alumna Elisabeth Walker-Young (BPhEd \u201902) recently added one of the country\u2019s highest honours to the impressive<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> list of accolades she has amassed through the years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The four-time Paralympian, who as an athlete and professional has been a champion for inclusion and accessibility in sport, was named to the Order of Canada in December, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/12\/brocks-chancellor-cheechoo-named-to-order-of-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alongside Brock University Chancellor Shirley Cheechoo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Canadian defence lawyer James Lockyer, who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2013\/10\/brock-to-bestow-honorary-degree-on-influential-canadian-lawyer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received an honorary degree from the University<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2013.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Order of Canada recognizes Canadians whose service shapes society, whose innovations ignite imaginations and whose compassion unites communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walker-Young has been an inspiration for athletes across the country, spending her early days training in Brock\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre before making her mark internationally.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Toronto native won six medals (three gold, one silver, two bronze) at four Paralympic Games, breaking several Canadian and world records during her career. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In her professional life, Walker-Young is Manager of Programs for the Canucks Autism Network and has held managerial roles with ParaSport Ontario, Curl B.C., viaSport B.C. and the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. She was chosen as Team Canada\u2019s Chef de Mission (official leader and spokesperson) for the Toronto 2015 Parapan American Games, following a stint as Assistant Chef de Mission for the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">London 2012 Paralympic Games<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walker-Young lives in Vancouver with her husband Ian Young (BSM \u201902), who was also a varsity swimmer with the Badgers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cElisabeth has been and always will be a complete inspiration,\u201d said Emily Allan, Brock\u2019s Associate Director, Athletics, who was classmates with Walker-Young during her studies at the University. \u201cFrom her athletic successes to her workplace, volunteer and community involvement, Lis has always succeeded in everything she does.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allan recalls years ago posting on her wall an article from a national publication naming Walker-Young on a list of women to watch, using it as motivation to aspire to greatness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond her many achievements, Walker-Young remains \u201cone of the most humble, down-to-earth people you\u2019d ever meet,\u201d said Allan, who has remained friends with her through the years. \u201cShe genuinely cares about others, listens wholeheartedly and wants to help you succeed. She is an amazing advocate for para-athletes, inclusive and adaptive sport, women in sport and many other noteworthy causes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allan encouraged current Brock students to learn more about Walker-Young\u2019s path and her successes. \u201cI hope they\u2019re driven to follow suit,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herb de Bray spent long hours working with Walker-Young as both her Badgers and national team swim coach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLis is a very talented, dedicated individual,\u201d he said while reminiscing about his time working with the memorable athlete. \u201cShe was just a joy to coach \u2026 She was always willing to go the extra mile.
