{"id":54789,"date":"2018-11-30T15:00:15","date_gmt":"2018-11-30T20:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=54789"},"modified":"2018-11-30T15:13:10","modified_gmt":"2018-11-30T20:13:10","slug":"ccovi-hosts-worlds-largest-tasting-of-canadian-sparkling-wine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/ccovi-hosts-worlds-largest-tasting-of-canadian-sparkling-wine\/","title":{"rendered":"CCOVI hosts world\u2019s largest tasting of Canadian sparkling wine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>More than 130\u00a0bottles of sparkling wine from four provinces were popped at Brock University\u2019s Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI) Thursday, Nov. 29, in the world\u2019s largest tasting of Canadian sparkling wine.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Stevenson, regarded as one of the world\u2019s leading sparkling wine experts, travelled to Brock from the United Kingdom to taste sparkling wines from Ontario, Quebec, B.C. and Nova Scotia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am really pleased because there are a lot of really good sparkling wines here,\u201d said Stevenson. \u201cAfter the first\u00a0flight I found a few potential gold and silver wines.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54791\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/SparklingWines2.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54791\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-54791\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/SparklingWines2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"304\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-54791\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More than 130 bottles of sparkling wines from across Canada were part of a tasting at Brock University\u2019s CCOVI.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Stevenson has been tasting top sparkling wines blind in the Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships (CSWWC), which he founded and is the head judge for. He said Canada is a strong contender and hopes some of the producers he earmarked will be encouraged to participate in the global competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt would increase the profile of Canadian sparkling wine. We haven\u2019t typically had many entries from Canada in the past to really see\u00a0what these producers have available from a competition perspective,\u201d Stevenson said.<\/p>\n<p>Over\u00a0a number of\u00a0hours, he\u00a0tasted\u00a0the wines\u00a0alongside wine writer and judge\u00a0Treve\u00a0Ring,\u00a0who said\u00a0the top wines stood out in the tasting room when it came to balance, complexity and depth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the top wineries in Canada are making sparkling wines that can easily stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the top wineries around the world,\u201d Ring said. \u201cIt was fantastic to see such diversity of wines and styles,\u00a0everything from ancient method through to traditional method sparkling wine that has been aged\u00a0for\u00a0years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The tasting was organized and hosted by CCOVI Senior Scientist Belinda Kemp. Her lab, dubbed \u2018The Bubble Lab,\u2019 is recognized for its leading sparkling wine research and outreach work, helping\u00a0grape growers\u00a0and winemakers produce quality sparkling wines through initiatives such as Fizz Club \u2014 a networking group for Canadian sparkling winemakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so pleased we were able to showcase wines from so many wineries, especially with our annual Fizz Club taking place next week,\u201d said Kemp. \u201cIt is quite incredible to watch the progress of Canadian sparkling wines as we raise awareness of production techniques and tackle challenges with CCOVI research.
