{"id":54687,"date":"2018-11-26T08:31:03","date_gmt":"2018-11-26T13:31:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=54687"},"modified":"2018-11-26T16:13:14","modified_gmt":"2018-11-26T21:13:14","slug":"earths-geological-history-explored-in-latest-bufs-screening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/earths-geological-history-explored-in-latest-bufs-screening\/","title":{"rendered":"Earth\u2019s geological history explored in latest BUFS screening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the intersection of art and science, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthropocene: The Human Epoch<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes viewers inside a critical moment in geological history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movie, which examines humanity\u2019s massive re-engineering of the planet, will be screened by the Brock University Film Society on Thursday, Nov. 29 at the Film House in downtown St. Catharines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Swedish actress Alicia Vikander narrates this feature documentary from the award-winning team of Jennifer Baichwal, Nicholas de Pencier and Edward Burtynsky. Using state-of-the-art camera techniques, the filmmakers document the evidence and experience of human planetary domination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthropocene<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the third documentary in a trilogy that includes <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manufactured Landscapes<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2006) and <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watermark<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (2013). The documentary is a companion piece to exhibitions of the same name currently showing at Toronto\u2019s Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery in Ottawa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The film follows the research of an international body of scientists, the Anthropocene Working Group, who argue the Holocene epoch gave way to the Anthropocene epoch in the mid-20th century, because of profound and lasting human changes to the Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Globe and Mail<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calls Anthropocene \u201cboth shocking and beautiful. \u2026 We have entered an epoch in which human activity is shaping the planet more than any natural force.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adds the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toronto Star<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cTo say that there are no easy answers to planetary woes is to state the obvious. But the film seeks to reveal rather than lecture, in the hope that our eyes will convince our brains to act before it\u2019s too late.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tickets for all BUFS shows are available at the Film House in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre (PAC) on the evening of screenings. General admission is $9 or $7 for members, plus tax.
