As soon as Julia Baird-Oryschak heard that the Grant Dobson Case Competition was open for entries, she knew who she wanted as a partner.<\/p>\n
\u201cI immediately called Bryan,\u201d said the Brock student, who is in her third year of a dual BBA and International degree.<\/p>\n
The annual competition is part of the Terry O\u2019Malley Lecture in Marketing and Advertising and invites students to showcase their creative and presentation skills to a panel of industry experts.<\/p>\n
Coinciding with Canada\u2019s new laws legalizing recreational cannabis, this year\u2019s competition brief asked teams to develop a detailed communications plan to establish brand awareness for a new licensed producer of recreational cannabis.<\/p>\n
Baird-Oryschak teamed up with Bryan Haakman, a fifth-year BBA co-op student, reconnecting after working at a co-op placement together in Toronto over the summer.<\/p>\n
After listening to the three finalist teams make their pitches on Thursday, Nov. 22, the panel named Baird-Oryschak and Haakman, and their fictional luxury brand campaign \u2018Elevate,\u2019 the winners of this year\u2019s Dobson competition.<\/p>\n
Both team members started out in small-town Ontario, but they have international aspirations. In January, Baird-Oryschak leaves for Germany, where she will finish her degrees. Haakman plans to complete his degree in Singapore. They agree that their participation in the Dobson Case Competition was a great opportunity to gain real-life marketing experience.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe competition allowed me to apply what I learned in the classroom,\u201d said Haakman.<\/p>\n
After presenting in an earlier round of competition, the field was narrowed down by faculty members from the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film and the Goodman School of Business.<\/p>\n
In the finals, the teams were judged by a panel that included Peter Shier, President of Naked Creative Consultancy, Lynn Fletcher, owner of Fletcher Weir Consulting, Mark Smyka, an independent marketing communications consultant and Greg Plata (BSM \u201908), Director of Strategy and Brand Development for Naked Creative.<\/p>\n
Shier, who wrote the cannabis brief the teams used to come up with their pitches, also delivered this year\u2019s Terry O\u2019Malley Lecture in Marketing and Advertising.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re not just here to make a presentation,\u201d he told the competitors later in his feedback. \u201cYou\u2019re here to tell a story.\u201d<\/p>\n
The judges remarked on the high calibre of the presentations.<\/p>\n
\u2018Higher Society\u2019 hoped to take the stigma out of cannabis use among young professionals. The four-person team comprised of two third-year Media Communication students, Ramie Bilowus and Matthew Scott, together with two third-year Business Communication students, Lucas Hansen and Ian Hart, took second place.<\/p>\n
For third-year accounting co-op student Ayomilekan Hambolu and third-year Business Communication student Niveditha Sethumadhavan, developing their campaign \u2018Dragon\u2019s Puff\u2019 offered a rare chance to collaborate.<\/p>\n
The best friends met in residence as first-year Brock students and said getting to work together was the highlight of the competition<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know each other so well and we know how each other works,\u201d said Hambolu.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat allowed us to be completely honest with our feedback to one another as we prepared,\u201d Sethumadhavan added. \u201cI highly encourage other students to step out of their comfort zones and get involved in the Dobson Case Competition. Even if you don\u2019t want to present, you can volunteer. It\u2019s a great experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hosted by the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film since 2005, when it was created by Sharon Broderick of the Goodman School of Business the Grant Dobson Case Competition is named in memory of Dobson, who served as the Executive Director of the Office of External Relations at Brock University.<\/p>\n\n\t
