{"id":54591,"date":"2018-11-21T14:08:50","date_gmt":"2018-11-21T19:08:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=54591"},"modified":"2018-11-22T13:05:36","modified_gmt":"2018-11-22T18:05:36","slug":"brock-community-collaboration-wins-big-at-provincial-art-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/brock-community-collaboration-wins-big-at-provincial-art-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Brock-community collaboration wins big at provincial art awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A sense of belonging was essential to Shauna MacLeod\u2019s recovery from mental illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing how much it helped, she felt compelled to create a place that evoked a similar feeling for others experiencing mental illness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That place, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thewillowcommunity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Willow Arts Community<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, now lives within Brock&#8217;s Rodman Hall Art Centre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two organizations received a provincial honour Monday, Nov. 19 for their efforts working together, taking home the Key Partnership Award at the Ontario Association of Art Galleries annual awards gala.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWillow Arts Community\u2019s tagline is &#8216;Belong, Empower, Create,&#8217;\u201d says MacLeod. \u201cThe community aspect is as important as the art creation. Social isolation has a measurable impact on health and wellness. We aim to provide a place where friendships are developed , and people are celebrated for their abilities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MacLeod established Willow Arts Community in 2015 to provide a support network where individuals who self-identify as having lived experience with mental illness or addiction can explore their creativity in a safe environment while participating in their own recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willow Arts Community has been based at Rodman Hall since March 2017. The partnership gave the organization space for art workshops and visibility as a legitimate organization. Membership has since grown to more than 150 people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost of our members had never engaged with our arts community or would feel that they could before joining the Willow,\u201d MacLeod says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Willow Arts Community offers free programming to adults who have lived experience with mental illness or addiction. Each year the organization offers dozens of free art workshops, hosts seasonal art exhibitions, provides peer-led open studio time and participates in community events such as Culture Days and In the Soil.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group has also released a full album of original music, <\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Songs from the Willow<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which was the culmination of a six-month music program working with musician Joe Lapinski.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MacLeod is very keen on stigma reduction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOften when people write about Willow Arts Community, the language is about people suffering from mental illness and addictions,\u201d she says. \u201cYes, sometimes we suffer. But sometimes we thrive.
