{"id":54443,"date":"2018-11-19T09:00:02","date_gmt":"2018-11-19T14:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=54443"},"modified":"2018-11-19T10:39:59","modified_gmt":"2018-11-19T15:39:59","slug":"bufs-film-reimagines-oscar-wildes-last-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/bufs-film-reimagines-oscar-wildes-last-days\/","title":{"rendered":"BUFS film reimagines Oscar Wilde&#8217;s last days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tragic and poetic story of the last days of Oscar Wilde will play out on screen during this week\u2019s Brock University Film Society (BUFS) offering.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Happy Prince<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a film about the literary genius who lived and died for love at the close of the 19th century, comes to the Film House in downtown St. Catharines on Nov. 22.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The movie was written and directed by, and stars Rupert Everett.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everett \u201cchannels Wilde\u2019s literary bearing, clever wit and absinthe-tinged wooziness with poignancy and pathos,\u201d says the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L.A. Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He is joined onscreen by Edwin Thomas, Colin Morgan, Emily Watson and Colin Firth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Wilde (Everett) lies on his deathbed in a cheap Parisian hotel, his past floods back, transporting him to other times and places. A kaleidoscope of memories, vignettes and hallucinations reveals Wilde\u2019s failed attempt to reconcile with his long-suffering wife (Watson), doomed love affairs with Lord Alfred Douglas (Morgan) and Robbie Ross (Thomas), and enduring friendship with novelist Reggie Turner (Firth). \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWilde\u2019s mighty struggle with himself, with his heavenly talent and earthly lusts, and the meaning of it all resonates so strongly with the direction and performance that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Happy Prince<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is easily elevated past period Victoriana \u2026 to move and engage in equal parts,\u201d says <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Screen International<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tickets for all BUFS shows are available at the Film House in the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre (PAC) on the evening of screenings. General admission is $9 or $7 for members, plus tax.
