{"id":54413,"date":"2018-11-15T11:45:37","date_gmt":"2018-11-15T16:45:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/?p=54413"},"modified":"2018-11-15T11:45:37","modified_gmt":"2018-11-15T16:45:37","slug":"strong-brock-presence-at-international-wine-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/2018\/11\/strong-brock-presence-at-international-wine-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Strong Brock presence at international wine awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether being celebrated as part of a top winery, earning gold and silver medals for their wines or sitting on the expert judging panel, Brock University graduates had a strong presence at this year\u2019s InterVin International Wine Awards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first time, Fielding Estate Winery in Beamsville earned a spot in the InterVin Top 10, and winemaker Richie Roberts (BSc \u201904) said it is an exciting honour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn Ontario, we have a lot of vintage variation and every year is a little different, so our portfolio is always evolving,\u201d said the Brock alumnus. \u201cI feel like the portfolio of our wines is better than it has ever been, and I think it is reflected in the awards we won.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54414\" style=\"width: 405px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54414\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" wp-image-54414\" src=\"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Lydia-Tomek-RS.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"395\" height=\"252\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-54414\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Brock alumna Lydia Tomek, winemaker at Burning Kiln, sits on the expert judging panel at InterVin International Wine Awards. (Photo by Jeff Kirk)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this year\u2019s competition, Fielding Estate Winery won gold medals for its 2016 Cabernet Franc and Estate Bottled Cabernet Franc, as well as its Sparkling Ros\u00e9. Roberts and his team also scored silver medals for the winery\u2019s 2017 Fireside Red Cabernet, 2016 Cabernet-Syrah and Traditional Method Brut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThose gold-winning wines \u2014 cab francs and sparkling \u2014 are wines that I think Ontario does really well. I am proud of that,\u201d said Roberts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 37-year old St. Catharines native said that is made possible in part by the work that Cool Climate Oenology and Viticulture Institute (CCOVI) Senior Scientist Belinda Kemp does with Fizz Club \u2014 a networking group for Canadian sparkling winemakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat has really been instrumental in helping to improve those sparkling wines. I have gotten several ideas from the Fizz Club events that we have done,\u201d Roberts said. \u201cThings we have talked about in those seminars, like the final pressure in the bottle for traditional method sparkling wine, have really impacted how those wines are being made now and we are seeing the success of those changes in the awards we are winning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also earning a spot in the Top 10 was CedarCreek Estate Winery in Kelowna, B.C., which received the honour for the second consecutive year. CedarCreek winemaker and Brock alumnus Taylor Whelan (OEVC \u201910) called the award \u201cextremely validating.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is a good way to measure our success in terms of if we are making progress when it comes to the style and quality of our wines,\u201d he said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2014 Platinum The Last Word \u2014 a Bordeaux-style red blend; 2014 Platinum Block Pinot Noir; and 2017 Platinum Riesling Icewine were the winery\u2019s gold medalists. They also took home three silvers and four honour awards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Whelan has worked at wineries in Niagara, New Zealand, Australia and British Columbia and has been head winemaker at CedarCreek Estate Winery for the last three harvests. He said the strong Brock showing at InterVin is an example of the quality of the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is a high-level program and we have been able to establish ourselves and begin to fill those winemaking positions,\u201d Whelan said. \u201cIt has allowed us to compete with Australians and New Zealanders, people who are educated at some of the top schools in the world, for the winemaking positions here in Canada.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Included in the team of experts who participated in the judging process for the international competition were alumni Lydia Tomek (BSc \u201904) winemaker at Burning Kiln, Emma Garner (BSc \u201904) winemaker at Thirty Bench and Rob Power (BSc \u201900) winemaker at Creekside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Six judging panels made up of representatives from different backgrounds in winemaking, media\/education or hospitality blind tasted their way through more than 1,200 wines. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing an international wine judge is something that I am very proud of,\u201d said Tomek, who has been a judge for InterVin since 2012.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 37-year old from Welland, who took home a silver at this year\u2019s competition for her 2017 Quitting Time Pinot Grigio, says it is no surprise the industry is seeing these successes from CCOVI\u2019s oenology and viticulture graduates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou are groomed to be thinkers and researchers and scientists,\u201d said Tomek. \u201cBut you are also breaking down that grapevine to understand why your vines are behaving the way they are, giving you the tools to troubleshoot and experiment when out in the industry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">InterVin head judge, Christopher Waters, is a continuing education instructor at CCOVI as well as the editor of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vines<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more information and a full list of the awards, visit<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.intervin.ca\/sitepages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">intervin.ca<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whether being celebrated as part of a top winery, earning gold and silver medals for their wines or sitting on the expert judging panel, Brock University graduates had a strong presence at this year\u2019s InterVin International Wine Awards.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":52,"featured_media":54415,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[119,41,1,4],"tags":[3630,182,7215,61,7216,6993,7209,7218,5011,2362,3629,7210,7213,7211,7214,7212,7217],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/54413"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/52"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=54413"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/54413\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":54422,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/54413\/revisions\/54422"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/54415"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=54413"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=54413"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/brocku.ca\/brock-news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=54413"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
